Thursday 30 November 2000:

In the first Board-L message posted in over a week, Tina Vickery reminds

her colleagues that Motion 00-36 "requires the seating of a Standing

Election Committee." She notes that the first step is publishing a call

for volunteers to all the various project mailing lists and says "Let's

get this very important email written and sent to the Project!" [The

Election Study Committee report, which she references, is online at:

http://www.timmweb.pair.com/esc/report.html. Motion 00-36 passed on Nov

16; the Board has about two weeks to act if they are going to meet the 30

day deadlinie recommended in the report.]

[There is no activity on the outstanding motion made by Ken Short to apply

for a collective service mark.]

Finally a Bride Corner: After several years of being an also ran,

RootsWeb.com, Inc has finally managed to win Dick Eastman's annual Best

Genealogy Site on the Web contest. Interestingly enough, it only managed

to do this after its original proprietors were unceremoniously shown the

door and the company was bought by MyFamily.com which, in one of those

little coincidences we find so interesting, happens to sponsor Mr.

Eastman's newsletter [hey, it never hurts to keep things in the family].

Mr. Eastman doesn't tell us who took place and show [as I recall he has in

the past] and gives no idea of how many votes were actually cast. He

does indicate that Root$web got 10% of the votes cast, with an additional

15% if one adds in all sites with "www.rootsweb.com" in the URL [all of

the additional sites he lists are actually USGW or WGW sites; if USGW and

WGW were allowed to use their own URLs in their site addresses, this

little bit of confusion wouldn't happen]. Anyways, a hearty congrats to

all the volunteers and unpaid contributors who make Root$web what it is;

they are the ones who deserve the honors attendant upon this award.

Monday 4 December 2000:

Tim Stowell asks Tina Vickery if she is volunteering to write to message

to the project regarding the Election Committee [yes, a full _five_ days

after Tina asked about it, our Glorious Leader finally gets around to

responding to her].

Tina says she would be happy to write the email and tells Tim to "stay

tuned".

Tuesday 5 December 2000:

Maggie Stewart says she thought that Motion 00-36 left the drafting of

volunteers up to the Election Study Committee and "the AB had no more say

in what was done or any further actions that needed to be taken." [you

wonder sometimes if they actually read anything they are voting on.]

Tina Vickery reminds Maggie that the ESC report requires the Board to

participate in the establishment of the standing Election Committee, and

tells her that she is currently working on the email that will be sent to

the project membership. Tim Stowell thanks Tina for her work on this.

Wednesday 6 December 2000:

Tina Vickery posts a draft email for soliciting volunteers for the

standing Election Committee. It reads:

"The USGenWeb Project Advisory Board is recruiting volunteers to serve on

the Standing Election Committee! This subCommittee will operate year round

and members serve a two-year term. Representative duties of the

subCommittee include conducting all national level elections; maintaining

current voter rolls; and researching voter software. The Advisory Board,

along with members of the Election Study Committee, encourage all USGenWeb

Project members to visit http://www.timmweb.pair.com/esc/report.html for

more details of this very important committee within the USGenWeb Project.

If you are interested in participating on this committee, please contact

Tim Stowell tstowell@chattanooga.net, National Coordinator AND Holly Timm,

Representative at Large hollyft@bright.net by December 22, 2000."

Pam Reid approves of the message and thanks Tina for her effort. She also

notes that she should probably post the Election Study Committee report on

the USGenWeb national page and asks if anyone objects to that.

Tina says she has no objection and thinks "that an acknowledgment of a job

"well done" be extended to the Election Study Committee. They all deserve

congratulations on a hard job well done!"

Sunday 10 December 2000:

Tim Stowell _finally_ gets around to giving a motion number [00-39] to Ken

Short's motion to apply for a service mark for "USGenWeb". He says the

Board can discuss later how to implement the motion since "every decision

that goes into such an application need not be written into the motion to

do an application." He also says that because the motion has been

discussed for several weeks, "voting will commence on this motion

immediately, unless someone has a strong objection on doing so."

Thus far, one Board member has voted yes on motion 00-39.

Help Wanted Corner: Pam Reid has posted an announcement regarding the

availability of the Board Secretary position on the USGenWeb home pages.

If you are interested, the announcement is here:

http://www.usgenweb.com/secretary.html; contact Tim Stowell to apply.

Scratching Each Other's Back Corner: Root$web is now publishing some new

UCE called the "RootsWeb Bulletin"; number 1 went out December 9. It

apparently will go "occasionally" to all those who get its other UCE: the

RW Review and Missing Links. The first issue of the RW Bull is nothing

but a page long commercial for Ancestry.com. [We still have a hard time

believing it when we see Root$web slavishly shilling for their former

sworn enemy, but there you have it.]

Giving Gifts Corner: Speaking of Ancestry.com, they are doing their annual

impression of a genealogy Santa and have opened all their databases,

including Images Online, for free access through December 21. They've

also heavily discounted their memberships for those who sign up during

this holiday season. I've already gone to the well and drank deeply and

recommend that you all do the same. A merry holiday thanks to Ancestry

for their yearly generosity!
