The joke's on you...its Your Daily Board Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Sunday 6 August 2000-Monday 7 August 2000:

Shari Handley declares the motion to table Motion 00-24a passes with 9 yes

votes and 1 no vote [We count 10 yes votes, but Shari discarded her own

vote since she was acting NC].

Tim Stowell clears up some confusion as to Motion numbers: "The motion to

table 00-24a - the amended version of 00-24 was numbered 00-26 as 00-25

died when that motion to table was withdrawn." [well sort of. He's

missing a dash or something.] He gives Jim Powell's motion to suspend

Linda Lewis until the trademark application is resolved number 00-27 and

opens the floor for discussion.

Pam Reid moves to table Motion 00-27 and Maggie Stewart seconds the

motion. [the stonewalling and hypocrisy these people engage in is

utterly breathtaking].

Pam is once again confused by too many numbers, noting "I think we are

getting carried away and confused with all of this renumbering of motions.

According to RRofO, motions can be amended and amended again, as long as

the amendment is germane to the original motion."

===

PostElection Wrap-Up Corner: Here's one message sent by a SC just prior

to the end of the election:

"Normally we do not get into politics but this year we need to encourage

you to take a moment to vote. We would also like to share with you, who

we feel will best represent USGenWeb and ultimately OKGenWeb...We support

Tim Sowell for National Coordinator and Ken Short for SW/SC CC Rep.

because they have proven to us that they have the USGenWeb project

foremost in mind by previous decisions they have made concerning the

USGenWeb project......Their thoughts and ideas for the project are the

same we had when we joined USGenWeb several years ago. Actions by others

are slowly but steadily trying to undermine the project....Since joining

the project we have watch while the same names on messages fly back and

forth trying to undermine the project by name calling, mud slinging and

anti rootsweb innuendos in the name of "making the USGenWeb Project

Better". We do not agree with the beliefs of those that would try to tear

down our project while helping to build a similar project. Now those same

people are candidates for the broad and we do not feel they will represent

our best interest..."

No, I don't know what "anti rootsweb innuendos" have to do with the USGW

election, or what "similar project" she means, but there you have it.

[And as for "mudslinging," well, a simple comparison of my page to Ken's

page ought to clear that up. <g>]

A Simple Question Corner: Being curious, we wrote to Archives

anklebiter "Kelly" [Kellygirl3398@mpinet.net] asking who "we" is in her

quote from yesterday [you remember, the "Yahoo, we won" quote], and got

this back in reply:

"Please feed your paranoia elsewhere."

Now, this might seem like a simple question, but apparently its right up

there with "who owns the Archives" as something its better not to answer.

Question Of The Day Corner: Who do you suppose Linda Lewis will appoint to

the vacant Census Project seat? Kelly Mullins maybe? Kevin Fraley? Or

will it be Mary Ann Hetrick?

"Finding the occasional straw of truth awash in a great ocean of confusion

and bamboozle requires intelligence, vigilance, dedication and courage.

But if we don't practice these tough habits of thought, we cannot hope to

solve the truly serious problems that face us- and we risk becoming a

nation of suckers, up for grabs by the next charlatan who comes along."

You reap what you sow...its Your Daily Board Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Monday 7 August 2000-Tuesday 8 August 2000:

Teri Pettit agrees that Motion 00-10 should be rescinded. She does not

understand why Board members who voted against severing the Census Project

would now support finding Linda Lewis to be not in good standing. She

says "I would prefer to continue working to correct the original injustice

rather than taking part in another one just so that everybody is treated

equally badly." [For what it is worth, I think the consistency these

Board members speak of refers to consistency in the Board's actions. If

one project should be delinked for certain actions, then so should

another. If this requires them to be inconsistent in their personal

voting, so be it. Tit for tat, don't you know.] Teri also reiterates her

belief that "If it isn't contrary to the Bylaws, I think subproject

coordinators should be able to do whatever they please without asking a

by-your-leave." Teri comments also on the 4 conditions that Joe suggested

be placed on the Census Project before it is relinked. She sees no reason

for the Board to insist that the nonprofit USGenWeb Census Project, Inc.

be dissolved, noting "Several state projects have incorporated, and they

didn't have to ask for Advisory Board approval. There is plenty of

precedent that this is something that projects can do on their own without

seeking the approval of anybody except their own project members." She

asks to know what the underlying concerns with nonprofit incorporation are

so that the Board "can find a way to deal with those concerns without

requiring that the Census Project be dissolved." She notes that since

some transcribers specifically request that their transcriptions not go

into the Archives it might be a good idea to come up with a "transcriber

agreement" that "that informs new transcribers that the original purpose

of the USGenWeb Census Project was to coordinate the placement of census

transcriptions in the USGenWeb Project Archives, and that unless they

specifically request otherwise (via a checkbox on the form), a copy of

their transcriptions will be placed in the Archives." Teri says she

personally trusts Linda Lewis to "hold the trademark on behalf of the

USGenWeb Archives Project, as a subproject of The USGenWeb Project

Archives," but since so many people don't trust her "it would ease minds

all around if it were not registered in the name of any individual." She

thinks it would be OK to register the trademark to either the USGenWeb

Project or the USGenWeb Archives Project. She also asks for clarity on the

kind of oversight Joe is suggesting. Teri thanks Joe for his "open mind

and concern with fairness." She notes that even though he is the Archives

representative, he has "been more even-handed than many of the

non-Archives Board reps." [sorry, almost choked on that one. <g>]

Tim Stowell calls for a vote on the motion to table Motion 00-27. Thus

far, eight Board members have voted "yes".

Tim tries yet again to explain how motions are numbered to Pam Reid. He

says "Perhaps the motions to table shouldn't be numbered, but I did so to

try and keep a handle on what exactly was being voted upon."

Pam responds that she understands wha he was trying to do, but "The way I

understand RRoO, amendments, etc. to motions become a "part" of the

original motion, along as they are germane...Maybe there is now way around

the confusion when there has been as much activity on a topic as there has

been on this particular one...This subject had SO much discussion and so

many motions, withdrawels, amendments, etc. that I am not sure it would

have been possible to keep really good track."

===

A Simple Question Revisited Corner: Or, If You Can't Take The Heat, Get

Out of The Kitchen... In the continuing saga of my attempt to get a

simple answer to a simple question, I wrote back to Kelly Courtney

Blizzard [Kellygirl3398@mpinet.net] and again asked merely who "we"

referred to in her exuberant post-election comment the other day. I got

this in reply:

"Your email to Kellygirl3398@mpinet.net has been blocked, your email

address has been placed on a list to automatically send you this notice.

Please do not continue to attempt to contact me, these messages are being

logged, and continual attempts to contact me may result in your being

reported to your ISP for harassment."

Now, this is someone who has quite recently spread these jewels of

kindness out among the USGW volunteers:

"Terria, you are so low that you would have sit up to kiss a snake ! Are

you attempting to contact all of our volunteers and plant little seeds of

doubt?...I guess she is so hell bend on destroying the Archives that she

has nothing better to do than to lie about Linda Lewis and also appear to

look friendly in the process." [USGENWEB-ALL, 2 Aug 2000]

"This is never-ending lies on your part and I sick of the ignorance, you

are all so jealous that the Archives and the Archives Census Project in

good standing with the USGENWEB and you HAVE BEEN BANNED !!!!!! DE-LINKED

!!!! GIVE IT UP, I will not answer and further emails on this matter."

[to a new Archives volunteer, 2 Aug 2000]

"I refuse to have any association with you or the goons that insist on

bringing the Archives and the ACP down at any costs." [to a fellow ALHN

volunteer, USGENWEB-ALL, 29 Jul 2000]

[Apparently, she can dish it out but not take it.]

Kelly, it turns out, is the Archives Census Project coordinator for IA and

KY and was until recently also involved with the KY ALHN, which she left

in a huff, but only after trying to convince some of her friends over

there to go with her. Anyways, Linda's minions are well-trained in the

art of avoiding a direct question and it looks I won't be getting an

answer to mine. Unless this is it:

"I would rather have no vote than to allow that certain "group" to sway

the elections with extra votes. I will be putting my votes to use to

retain Tim as NC and also to vote for anyone one who supports Tim."

[Kelly Courtney Blizzard, USGENWEB-ALL, 12 Jun 2000; before Tim was an

announced candidate]

"There are in fact, four very significant stumbling-blocks in the way of

grasping the truth, which every man however learned, can scarcely allow

anyone to win a clear title to wisdom, namely, the example of weak and

unworthy authority, long standing custom, the unfeeling of the ignorant

crowd, and the hiding of our own ignorance while making a display of our

apparent knowledge."

Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee...its Your Daily Board Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Tuesday 8 August 2000:

Teri Pettit notes that it makes no sense to her to table Motion 00-27,

since "Tabling is for motions that for some reason are better dealt with

later, such as when information needs to be gathered." Since Motion 00-27

suggests suspending Linda Lewis while an investigation into her service

mark application continues, "it only makes sense in the present moment."

She suggests that it is better to vote on Motion 00-27 now since the

motion won't be applicable at a later date.

Voting on the motion to table Motion 00-27 continues. Thus far 9 Board

members have voted "yes" and 5 have voted "no".

===

Election News: The following announcement was released yesterday by Roger

Swafford, Chair of the Election Committee:

"The polls for the NC runoff election will be open from 0001 CDT 9 August

through 2359 CDT 22 August. The ballot is located at

http://elsi123.august.net/~usgenweb/vote-nc2.html All members who received

a Voter ID for the regular election may vote, including those who did not

vote in the regular election."

The April 1 cutoff date still applies; if you have lost or deleted your

Voter ID you will need to write to your EC representative to obtain it.

Our Name In Lights Corner: We hear the USGenWeb Project website was

mentioned yesterday on a Portland, OR television show called AM Northwest

on KATU TV. Here's a report from a viewer: "Caught this program this

morning--only lasted about 5 minutes or so. She featured the

familysearch.com site first because the LDS were sort of the "originators"

of genealogical research. Mentioned 2 other sites I wasn't familiar with

(ngsgenealogy.org & onlinegenealogy.com), Rootsweb actually was 3rd, and

she showed some of the "beginners lessons" that Rootsweb features.

Ancestry.com was also touched on, and last but not least--USGenWeb. Even

though we were mentioned last, she said we were the first site brought up

by her search engine (don't know which one that was) when she typed in

"genealogy."

Incognito Corner: We hear that Mary Ann Hetrick, Kelly Courtney Blizzard

and Ed Black [all members of the Archives Census Project] have been

showing up under assumed names in the ALHN IRC chat rooms. Mary Ann

apparently plays a rather unconvincing newbie and fancies the name Irene.

Fighting a losing battle...its Your Daily Board Show!

*warning* contains editorial content. Read at your own risk!

Wednesday 9 August 2000-Thursday 10 August 2000:

Voting concludes on the motion to table Motion 00-27, with 9 Board members

voting "yes" and six voting "no." Tim Stowell declares the motion passed.

Tim notifies the list that he's subbed newly elected Board members Ellen

Pack and Richard Harrison to "the various lists," "so that they can get a

feel for the Board before their actual terms start." Ken Short is already

subbed. New members will be allowed to participate in discussions prior

to September 1, when their terms start, but they will not be allowed to

vote on motions.

===

Plausible Denial Corner: Archives Asst. Co-ordinator Joy Fisher is

professing to be shocked, _shocked_ at the anonymous letter currently

being targeted at the Census Project members [reported here a few days

ago]. She has assured Ron that "as far as I have been able to determine"

[note the caveat] the message "did not originate from anyone connected

with the Archives. It probably can from someone with an ax to grind.

Either to embarass you and your project - or to get the Archives blamed

for sending it." [could it be... Satan?] She suggests that Ron and other

recipients of the email contact AOL's abuse address and report it as spam,

and even says she'll write to them too, since "There is no place in

USGenWeb for this kind of behavior."

===

"It is natural for man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to

shut our eyes against a painful truth, and listen to the song of that

siren till she transforms us into beasts. For my part, whatever anguish of

spirit it may cost, I am willing to know the whole truth; to know the

worst, and to provide for it."
