Sunday 10 October 1999:
New Board Secretary Ed Book thanks the Board for "your confidence and for
the warm welcome." He apologizes for the delay in responding and says
he's been on vacation for the last two weeks. He is currently working
through his email backlog and asks the Board to let him know if there's
anything urgent that needs to be taken care of.

Over and above....its Your Daily Board Show!

Tuesday 12 October 1999:
There is no Board-L activity on this date.
Update on the News: Colorado's state pages are safely back on Root$web.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cogenweb/comain.htm
You Read It Here First: As reported here yesterday, Root$web has
announced the beta version of its new WorldConnect Project, which is
essentially another online GEDCOM storage site. Among the many
fine features listed, one seems to be missing: ad banners on every page
[currently Ubid and Office Max]. Some of the GEDCOMs currently available
also include information on living persons. According to Root$web CEO,
Robert Tillman, "Unlike with certain other Web sites, you have full
control over your GEDCOM. You can change or remove it completely at any
time and RootsWeb will never burn it onto a CD-ROM or charge others to
access it." [For those of you who have noted the remarkable and increasing
similarities between Root$web and Ancestry, remember--imitation is the
sincerest form of flattery.]
In Other News: Also reported in this week's New Zoo Review, DearMyrtle is
now hosted by Root$web. Someone sent me one of her columns this week and
she has wasted no time in shilling for RW's new free web space offer. Her
new address is: http://www.dearmyrtle.com.
Root$web has also announced its revamped Donor appreciation page. The
top-listed donor for 1999 is ... Ancestry.com. They got top listing even
over the guy who donated in memory of his parents.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~donors
Today's quotation comes from a reader:
"It is the lying at the top levels of our society that concerns me the
most because morality, like water and unlike money, really does trickle
down. I am concerned that some at the top have adopted a concept that
lying for the higher good is all right--that dishonesty in the name of
righteousness is just fine."

Happy days are here again...its Your Daily Board Show!
*warning* contains content of an editorial nature. Read at your own risk!
Wednesday 13 October 1999:
There is no Board-L traffic on this date.
Filling a Hole Corner: Don't forget that tomorrow, Oct 16, is the last day
to get your resumes and interest letters to the Board if you are
interested in being considered for the vacant NE/NC CC rep position.
A Carnival of Sorts: Today marks the one year anniversary of the Daily
Board Show. The DBS began on Oct 15, 1998 with a post entitled "Items of
interest on Board-L today"; here's a look at the things we were reading
about way back when [from USGENWEB-ALL]:
"Things of interest in the Board-L Archives for 13 Oct 1998
They are discussing how to number motions and amendments so people can
follow threads
They are discussing a secretary to number motions and amendments and
forward info to the webmaster
they have called for a vote on a change in wording pertaining this list on
the web pages
the Archives file managers have submitted their verdict on the Ken Thomas
Affair, and as expected Linda Lewis' handpicked group of friends and
associates have fully supported every action she has taken or ever will
take <g>
they are discussing what a horrible thing it is that the Board-L list is
no longer private"
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank the readers who've stuck with
this for so long, and to the many of you who've contributed news items,
editorial perspective, quotes, and support. And of course, I'd also
like to thank the Board and Root$web, without whom none of this would be
possible.
That said, we are going on vacation. The DBS will return in two weeks.
See you then!
"Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of
our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable
views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little
corner of the earth all one's lifetime."

Totally jetlagged...its Your Daily Board Show!
*warning* pent-up editorial content over the last two weeks, released
today! Read at your own risk!
Since we've been gone for two weeks, very litle has happened. In fact,
nothing has happened, until yesterday:
Oct 14-Oct 29, 1999:
There was apparently no Board-L traffic during this entire time.
Tomorrow's News Today: A motion is made and seconded to appoint Richard
Howland to the vacant NE/NC position. Voting has begun and at this time 8
board members have voted "aye". [It is understood from a little bird that
Mr. Howland is RW's "preferred candidate" for the position. The DBS
welcomes him to the Board.]
More Info on the Election: On Oct 22, Board Secretary Ed Book posted a
notice to several project mailing lists noting that "On Oct 10, the
Advisory Board requested letters of interest from any County Coordinators
(CC's) in the Northeast/North-central (NE/NC) region who were interested
in filling the vacant NE/NC County Coordinator Representative Position on
the Advisory Board. Two CC's are interested in filling this position.
In alphabetical order, they are Richard M. Howland and David C. Young.
Richard M. Howland is CC of Piatt Co., IL, and David C. Young is CC of
Belknap Co, NH, Carroll Co., NH, Androscoggin Co., ME and TC (Town
Coordinator) of Rockport and Gloucester, Essex Co., MA It is the opinion
of the Advisory Board that both of these applicants are well qualified
and that either of them would ably represent the NE/NC CC's on the
Advisory Board." NE/NC region CCs are asked to comment either publicly or
privately as to which they prefer. [According to Ginger Hayes, support for
Richard Howland was "overwhelming"]
Update On The News: Board member Tina Vickery, who is not a Wisconsin CC,
has been elected the new WIGW State Coordinator. Tim Stowell, who claims
to be too busy to read his email thoroughly, has been elected as the new
ASC in WIGW. Congrats to both!
In Other News: While we were away, the following interesting things
happened:
1) "Brian's shorts" showed up again, this time being auctioned on Ebay.
According to a message sent fromm "bleverich@hushmail.com", the item was
on auction from Oct 17 thru oct 27 and teh starting bid was $5.00. The
item description read: "Come see em, smell em and bring your credit card
now! Buy these limited edition shorts while Brain is still an unknown
megalomaniac. We detatched him from a tree hugging session long enough to
remove his shorts for you. So, act now people, quantities are VERY
limited!!" [we are very sorry we missed this auction; we hear there was a
picture!]
2) MIGW member Pam Reitsch was featured in an online article in her local
paper. You can read it at:
http://www.detnews.com/1999/livingston/9910/22/10220174.htm
Except for the unfortunate mention of the USGenWeb Project as "a feature
of RootsWeb", its really quite a nice article, and we congratulate Pam and
MIGW.
3) An interesting rumor was slipped under our door claiming that Ed Book
is now on the Root$web payroll. [Why are we not surprised?]
4) The former Bridgett Smith, now known as Bridgett Edwards, has assured
everyone that the problems at RW are being worked on. Apparently access
to RW has been unreliable for the last couple of days. At various times,
all USGW state pages at RW have not been available, the RW home page has
not been available, the new web server was down again and all pages
reverted to old versions on the old server, ftp access was out, etc. But,
we are assured, "they are working on it."
[Yes, to those of you who've asked, we had a great vacation! Normandy is
lovely this time of year. And Happy Halloween to all!]
"But he made too many enemies
of the people who would keep us on our knees."
---Andy Partridge [XTC], "Peter Pumpkinhead"
