Description of project:
For SL day, we partnered with NTUC Health Senior Day Care (Toa Payoh) to come up with an engaging and interactive program for the elderly.
As a class, we brainstormed for ideas and decided on 3 activities to engage the cognitive and fine motor skills of the elderly.
Our first activity involved showing zoomed-in pictures of Singapore landmarks and giving the elderly time to guess the landmark.
The second activity was an educational lesson about various TCM acupressure points on the body to help relieve a multitude of aches and pains.
The final activity was a dance session with the elderly. We taught them the moves of “Macarena” and after letting them practice for a while, we danced together with the music.
Class Reflections:
I feel very happy during this experience as I’m able to bond closer and hang out more with more of my classmates getting to know each other more. But most importantly, seeing that the elderly understand what we say and being able to help them is what makes me most satisfied. ~ Lee Pei Yi
My heart is filled with abundant warmth after this service-learning day. I felt genuinely happy that I was also a part of making someone’s day. The elderly were so adorable while doing the Macarena! ~ Sri Natasha
It was truly enriching and eye-opening and I definitely enjoyed myself during SL Day. It really warms my heart to know that we managed to put a smile on the elderlies’ faces and make their day better. ~ Andrea Chin
I feel happy to be able to entertain the elderly with interesting activities and comforting to see most of the people in class coming together to engage the elderly ~ Su Wei Chen
I feel very heartwarming about this experience, seeing the elderly come together to interact with us and participate in the activities. they were very participative and it is also sad to see that they are not able to have such programs every time and are not able to go out that often ~ Rachel Wong
