Description of project:
For our SL Project with Nurture by CDC @AMK/Hougang, our class planned a 60 min programme of activities for disadvantaged children aged 7-12 via video-conferencing (Zoom) on the 7th Aug 2021.
Our activities included:
Math games (20 min)
BINGO
Have you had half?
Each child will pick a number between 0 to 100. The one who picks the number closest to half of the average guess is the winner. A total of 3 rounds will be conducted.
Aims
We hope to improve the children’s computing skills and logical reasoning skills through these fun math games.
Teaching Origami (20 min)
Aims
This can help them to improve their fine motor skills and brain development as well as to develop a sense of imagination and creativity in them.
National Day Kahoot Quiz (20 min)
We have designed a 7 question Kahoot quiz featuring questions related to National Day.
Aims
This quiz will help the children develop a sense of belonging to Singapore as it strengthens their knowledge of the nation. It also teaches children about the history of Singapore and how we have come a long way from our independence.
Class Reflections:
This session was a fruitful and enriching experience. It taught us how to be more patient and understanding towards people. We also learnt how to adapt to difficult situations. For example, we realised that it was difficult to get the children to understand certain instructions. Moreover, we didn’t expect the children to be very playful and loud, hence the execution of our activities were quite challenging as they were not very receptive to the instructions.
All 3 of our rehearsals went smoothly and made us believe that the event would be smooth, quick, and easy. Unfortunately, that was not the case, some technical difficulties were encountered. However, we were able to overcome the difficulties together and finish most activities at the end, despite some being skipped due to time constraints. We learned how to adapt to sudden situations and especially important skills such as teamwork.
We realised that not every child will be proactive or be interested in the activities we planned. For origami that I was carrying out, it was hard for the children to learn the folding steps without clear guidance, the slides and pictures were insufficient but showing it to them on the screen definitely helped. Giving loud words of encouragement helped keep them going.
Overall, our project is successful as we managed to allow the kids to enjoy themselves and bond with each other.
