Description of project:
Our project focused on raising awareness of the pressing need and the importance for bone marrow donors for the bone marrow donor programme in Singapore. We chose to raise awareness through distributing information filled leaflets virtually to all the classes in the school. We worked in tandem with the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) to create the leaflets. All the virtual leaflets contained information about the need for bone marrow donors and a QR code which will redirect the reader to bone marrow donor programme’s be a donor page where they can sign up to become a bone marrow donor themselves. These leaflets were virtually disseminated through telecommunication platforms such as WhatsApp to the rest of the school to encourage them to sign up as a bone marrow donor.
Class Reflections:
Through the entire SL day journey, we learnt many things. We managed to learn a lot about the need for teamwork and good communication. Since we were partnering with the BMDP and we had to constantly ask them for feedback regards to our leaflet we learnt the need for clear communication between the class and the organisation as well as clear communication within the class itself so that everyone was on the same page and knew what was going on.
The extremely short timeline that we were given helped to reinforce the need for this as well. The short timeline we were given helped us to gain time management skills. Due to the short timeline we had to learn how to organise our time wisely and when to start on specific parts of the project. This helped to cultivate our time management skills.
The project not only cultivated our soft skills but it also opened up our eyes to those who need help in society. Though we knew about bone marrow donation, we never really understood the gravity of the situation . However when we had our first zoom meeting with the organisers and they told us about the reality of the situation in Singapore and gave us statistics to backup what they were saying, it made us realise and understand the need for being aware about society and its problems. It made us realise the importance of sympathy and being able to feel the pain and experiences that others are feeling so as to help them and society improve as a whole.
