Description of project:
Our proposed project is to raise awareness about the Yellow Ribbon Project and what we can do to help ex-offenders reintegrate back into society. Our project consists of two parts; a speech and an informational poster.
The speech which will be recited during morning assembly will consist of a brief introduction and history of the Yellow Ribbon Project and what students can do to help the cause. The poster, which is pasted on the notice boards across the school compound will reiterate on what we can do to show that we care about ex-offenders. There is a QR code on the bottom of our poster which directs students to the Yellow Ribbon project website for anyone interested to find out more about this meaningful cause.
Class Reflections:
Some of the key takeaways we learnt is about the importance of giving back to society and to care about everyone in the community. Everyone makes mistakes in their lives. While the ex-offenders have faced the consequences of their mistakes, we should be more inclusive towards them as they are determined to start anew. By allowing them a second chance in life, they would be able to lead a life they deem meaningful. Our class learnt that this does not just apply to ex-offenders, but to other groups of people too. We should show empathy and not discriminate against other groups of people, such as the disadvantaged and the mentally challenged.
Through this project, we have also become closer as a class through working together to deliver our project. We were able to identify our classmates’ strengths in aspects such as leading the class, coming up with project ideas and designing of posters.
While things went smoothly in general, we did experience some challenges during the planning process. We initially wanted to make some yellow ribbons that students can tie around their wrists to show their support for the Yellow Ribbon Project. Students can feel free to take a yellow ribbon for themselves from the booth we will be setting up. There will also be notes on how one can contribute, as well as a QR code linking to the Yellow Ribbon Project website. However, due to time constraints, we had to scrap this idea off.
