Description of Project:
For our JC1 SL Day on 8th Aug 2022, we worked on the 'SAJC Clean' project.
The aim of our service learning project is helping relieve our SAJC cleaners of some of their work by helping them clean major areas on the second floor as a class and understand ultimately their daily work and struggles on the job.
We are split into three groups, one group clean classrooms in blocks C and D, another clean classrooms block G and H, and the last cleaning the reading room and the hall.
In addition, we also interviewed the cleaners to get a deeper understanding of their work life, asking questions to learn more about them!
Class Reflections:
During this service learning, we cleaned the C and D blocks in our school. It was an enriching experience as we learnt how physically demanding cleaning the classrooms were for the school cleaners. We could not imagine how they had to come to school at 6am just so that students will be able to study in a clean environment. We realised how important keeping our classrooms clean was and we will do our best to keep our classrooms clean! We hope to decrease the workload of the cleaners and to play our part as students of SAJC! Thank you aunties and uncles for your hard work and dedication!
We cleaned block G classrooms in Level 2. I think we did this activity with the idea that we were going to make the lives of the cleaning staff easier. Even though our efforts are minute compared to the daily tasks that they have to fulfil, this activity has helped us to gain a better appreciation of the hard work that they have to put in in order to keep our learning environment hygienic and safe.
During this service learning, we learnt that cleaning classrooms are much more physically and mentally demanding than what we imagined. As such we feel that we should not take things for granted and appreciate what has been done and to help ease the workload of the cleaners by reducing their jobs such as just even helping to push in the chairs. That is the moral value that we should take into account for and to implement in future endeavours.
I feel that we are able to empatise with what the cleaners have to do eveyday. it allows us a brief glimpse into the tiring life thats cleaners go through. Being able to interact the cleaners was heartening and allowed me to reflect myself as well. It was tiring for us to even clean just a small area and i could not imagine how tiring it would be for the cleaners to have to clean the whole school in addition to checking all the classrooms at their age. we admire the effort that the cleaners put in.
Self- We learnt how to step into the shoes of cleaners and understand the hard work put into cleaning our classrooms, giving us a hygienic environment to study in. Relational- learning personal struggles and feelings. Empathise with them when we hear of the difficulties they experience. Operational - learnt how to draft interview questions w/o being too insensitive.
