Description of project:
The main aim of our SL project was to interact with the elderly at NTUC Health Senior Day Care (Punggol South). It was done through 2 zoom sessions held on 6th August 2020 from 10.30 to 11.10 am and 1.45-2.45 pm respectively. We did a total of 3 different activities which included a Guessing Game, a National day karaoke and pre-recorded performances. Our three activities focused on the theme ‘Singapore’ as it was the eve of National Day.
The first activity, a Guessing Game, was a game to evoke fun and interaction with the elderly by asking them questions about the history of Singapore.
The second activity consists of English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil national day songs. We pre-recorded all four songs and played it for them through zoom. The purpose of the National Day Karaoke was for the seniors to go down memory lane with four songs in the four major language groups. The third activity was pre-recorded performances. We wanted the elderly to just sit back and enjoy our performances. The performances included magic tricks, painting of the Singapore Flag, ukulele performance and an origami tutorial video of the Merlion.
The session was hosted in English and Mandarin. Despite technical difficulties, the elderly were avidly responding to our activities. Overall, through enthusiastic participation from both our class and NTUC Health, SL Day 2021 with 21A02 was a triumph.
Class Reflections:
This project has allowed us to entertain the elderly by playing games and performing for them. This experience has given us the opportunity to bring joy to the elderly. It has also given us an opportunity to do something for our community. The SL day has allowed us to bond through the preparation of different activities for the elderly.
There were some hiccups as we miscalculated some planning and we fumbled a little, which is an area of improvement if we were to have such an activity again. However, a good thing that came out of this was being able to adapt with whatever we have and still produce an engaging and fun time not only for the elderly, but for ourselves too!
