Description of Project:
Our class project focused on the children who face difficulties in Singapore. We worked with CDC Nurture. We split into two groups and took charge of the upper primary and lower primary students separately. A series of activities were conducted.
For the upper primary students, we organised a game of charades where one student had to act out the word displayed to them on the ipad. The other students are in charge of guessing the word. In addition, the words are related to the theme of national day. For the lower primary students, we played magical chairs with national day songs.
Lastly, we gathered all the students together in the centre and provided them with tote bags. They could design and draw on their own tote bags with markers, according to the theme. Hence, they were able to draw landmarks and features of Singapore, for example, Marina Bay Sands and the Merlion. The best part was that they could bring home the tote bags.
Class Reflections:
“At first, I had a hard time adjusting to my surroundings as the children there were all loud and uncooperative. However, as I spent more time with them, I realised that it was only due to their pure excitement, as well as shy nature. after interacting with them, i've learnt to be more patient and will try my best to always make the first move in extending my warmth to others.”
“Through interacting with the kids, I realised that every child had different personalities. It was important for us to identify these differing personalities and change in the way we interacted with them. For some who lacked confidence, it was important for us to provide more motivation and support, to get them to participate in games. This was truly an eye opening experience for me.”
“I feel appreciative of their willingness to converse with us despite the huge age gap. Their participation made me feel grateful for having the opportunity to bless these kids with company and joy.”
“As a slead activist, I experienced how organizing and planning an event would be. It truly made me grow and be more responsible. Besides this, I also saw many other sides of my classmates. Some of them were quiet at first, became outspoken and interactive with the children. Holding this event was really enjoyable, interacting with the children and seeing smiles on their faces, thanks to them being cooperative too. It was not easy but we received many positive feedbacks in the end and we’ll definitely do it again.”
“It was a really wholesome experience, seeing the children having fun with the activities prepared. It is also really heartening to see my classmates engaging themselves with the children and stepping out of their comfort zones to try their best to integrate well with them. The children there were also really proactive and participative, which contributed to the extraordinary experience we had with them.”
