Description of Project:
For our JC1 SL Day on 8th Aug 2022, we worked on the 'Silver Homes' project in collaboration with the Central Singapore Community Development Council.
We are tasked to interact with the elderly as well as clean up and declutter their houses. We help to make their living conditions better so that it is more comfortable and tidier to live in. Some tasks include cleaning the windows, sweeping and mopping the floor, washing the toilet, clearing out unwanted items etc.
Most of the elderly are very friendly and welcoming and we are also very thankful to be given this opportunity to contribute back to the society, and put a smile on their faces!
Class Reflections:
The house (unit 2) that my group was assigned to was relatively clean. We changed the bed sheets, mopped the floor, clean the toilet and windows, wiped the cabinets etc. She wanted to eat with us but sadly, we are not allowed to due to the covid-19 safety measures. We interacted with the auntie and learned a lot about her!
Khairee, belinda, hakim, yuxuan: The house we were assigned to was extremely cluttered and there wasn’t enough space for us to clean together. However, our group members thought and allocated the task efficiently and productively which allowed us to eventually clean the house. Also, the aunty was also very reluctant to throw away a lot of things that she didn’t need which made the space even more limited. However at the end of the day, we are very glad that we are able to help her reach and clean places that she couldn’t reach, such as the walls, windows and shelves at the top. There was a sense of satisfaction seeing how happy the aunty was when we left and she even texted us for the pictures we took together as she wanted to keep those photos for memories…
Vanna, jacelyn, cornelius, xiangming: The house we were assigned to was extremely dusty and moldy, there were a lot of dirt spots and filth that needed to be cleaned and dusted. We had to clean the walls as they were dirty and yellow, as well as the shelves which had items that were wrapped in plastic bags. The aunty did not wish for us to clean much as she said that she only needed help with cleaning one shelf as well as the window railings. We tried our best to clean as much as we could help with, we even mopped some parts of the floor that were dirty. At the end of the day, we were glad to have been able to help the aunty with cleaning her house as her house was in a poor condition as she has not been able to clean much due to her bad back. After we were done, she was telling us how grateful she was for us to help her and that she wishes us all the best in our endeavours :)
