Description of project:
Peer Teaching Experience: Service Learning Group
To “learn” part:
During SLEAD lesson, we shared informations on childhood cancer (eg. mental state of caregivers, different kinds of support to provide and ways to help the children). We also set up 2 small games -- Finding The Doner! and Mighty Caregivers!. This is to help the class to understand how difficult it is to cure the disease with limited resources and how hard it is for the caregiver to multitask on taking care of the children while managing their work and all.
To “do” part:
On Service Learning Day, since we did not contact any organizations for service, we had assigned our classmates to design infographic posters in their respective groups.
Class Reflections:
Overall, the class has learned more about the caregivers of the children with cancer, unlike the usual topic that only focuses on the children having hard times. They have understood the hardships of the caregivers and learnt to appreciate themselves and be grateful. Some even state that “it inspires me to do something for them in the future” which is really heart warming.
The games that we have set up actually provide a visual for them to understand the problems faced by caregivers. Most state that the games are very entertaining, interactive and informative. It leaves a deep impression about the lessons behind these games for them which effectively convey our aim of these games.
Designing posters sufficiently help them to recall what they have learnt from the lesson and help them to further think about what they can advocate through the posters.
