Description of project:
Our project aims to interact and engage with the elderly at NTUC Health Senior Day Care (Punggol South).
Our class planned a total of 3 activities which were charades, folding origami paper and teaching the elderly a simple dance.
The first activity was charades, where our classmates acted out an action and the elderly would have to guess correctly what they were acting.
The second activity is folding origami papers such as paper boats and boxes.
The third activity is teaching the elderly a simple dance. The dance steps were choreographed by our classmates to ensure it was simple to understand, easy to follow and at the same time, fun and engaging.
Class Reflections:
Through this project, we had a lot of fun interacting and engaging with the elderly. Even though we were not physically present at the centre to conduct the activities, we could still feel their enthusiasm and zeal. They were very participative and engaged throughout the whole session, hence we were very glad and thankful. In addition, we felt that this experience was very heartwarming as we were able to see how the elderly enjoyed the activities and their wide smiles.
Quoted from one of our classmates, “It was very fun to mingle with the elderly! We hoped that our games would help to make them more excited for our following programmes and it really looked like they enjoyed themselves.”
This experience provided a platform for us to contribute back to society which is very fulfilling as we hardly have such opportunities to do so in our hectic school schedule. Quoted from one of our classmates, “ Our slead journey was fun and fulfilling. I am grateful for being given the opportunity to be able to bring joy into the lives of the elderly. I have also been inspired to do more voluntary work.” Furthermore, through this meaningful service, it has inspired some of us to more voluntary work and contribute back to society in the future.
All in all, we felt that this SL day was an enriching experience which enabled us to better interact with the elderly and bring joy to their lives.
