Description of project:
Our project’s target audience was the elderly at NTUC Health Senior Day Care (Ci Yuan).
We started the programme with a simple stretching exercise that the seniors could participate in after watching a pre-recorded video demonstration done by the students. After watching the video, the selected students chosen to facilitate the Zoom session participated in the activity together with the seniors and encouraged them to engage in the exercise. The correspondent at the care centre was very helpful in engaging the seniors and prompting them to take part in this exercise.
Following that, our class did a short presentation on the food culture of Singapore and the different cuisines that are commonly enjoyed by most citizens. The presentation was accompanied by an educational and interactive video showcasing our local delights.
Lastly, the finale of the programme was a pre-recorded performance featuring a student from my class singing the widely popular chinese song, 爱如潮水 by the artist Jeff Chang. After the performance, we thanked the elderly for their participation and bid them a heartfelt farewell.
Class Reflections:
The JC2 SL Day provided us with the opportunity to interact with the elderly in our communities and give back to our communities.
During the preparation for the presentation, we distributed the workload and worked together to come up with activities such as simple exercises and performances for the elderly. Through the preparation, we were able to bond with our friends and make some memorable moments.
On the SL Day, we were nervous to present to the elderly as we were doing it through virtual means and was unsure whether we were able to capture the attention of the elderly.
Despite struggling to communicate in chinese, we were happy when we saw the elderly taking part in the exercises and enjoying the performances.
One of the memorable moments of the presentation was when the organisation asked us to take part in their afternoon exercises where they say ‘I love you’ and ‘Good afternoon’ in the 4 different languages. Although we were clueless about what we were saying, we were glad that we were able to put smiles onto the faces of the elderly through a simple action.
All in all, the JC2 SL Day was a fulfilling day for all of us.
