Description of project:
We worked with the Bone Marrow Donor Programme (BMDP) for an advocacy project. We created a poster alongside an online survey where we were able to dismiss common misconceptions about bone marrow donation and changed people’s perception about being a bone marrow donor. We were also able to through this, advise people on how to become a bone marrow donor. The poster along with the survey was published on Instagram where both our Saints and the public were able to participate and learn more about BMDP. The first 50 participants were also able to receive prizes where the giveaway of prizes is coordinated by our classmates.
Class Reflections:
Through this project, I’ve learnt that it is not easy to work in a large group (class) since more manpower requires higher levels of coordination. It was strategic for the ICs to divide us into groups then delegate the tasks accordingly. I realised the importance of adequate planning in the beginning stage because this forms the basis of our project and if it is not done properly, we will face larger problems when executing it. Previously, I didn’t know much about bone marrow donation and didn’t know about the existence of BMDP. After going through the service learning process, I’ve found out more about BMDP and realise how important it is to sign up as a donor as it may help to save someone’s life. Now that I’ve gone through SL, I would encourage the people around me who are eligible to sign up as a bone marrow donor and spread this awareness to others as well.

I have learnt that I work really well in teams and that I am good at organising ideas. However, one thing our partners can improve is that the activities felt a bit lacking for all 25 students to actually put an effort in, in which maybe only a handful of students actually do it. So maybe activities that include each individual's efforts would be great.

I learnt that I am helpful in creating infographics. I learnt that donating blood is such a seamless and easy process, and that there really is a need for more people to be made aware of the need to register as a donor, because we could be saving lives at very little of our expense

I have learnt how to work in a large group. I feel that the task designation was good, but i feel that the Instagram account can be more publicised to be made more popular. I learnt how BMDP is the only public register in Singapore for bone marrow donation.

I realised that I am able to summarise large chunks of data (about BDMP) into a short survey for both collection of possible donor information, as well as educate them about it. However, I wasn't able to start the survey, as in I am very confused about how to start the survey appropriately. I guess this can be improved with experience and practices.
