Description of project:
Our class had the project of teaching water conservation to a group of K1 children. Using the SLead lessons given to us to plan the activities we wanted to do, our class collectively came up with 3 activities. Our first activity was an opening song, whereby we not only came up with slides and sang to it, but also dance moves. We are sure that they had fun following our simple dance moves and learnt more about saving water through the song.
Our second activity was a skit. We took up a different approach of doing puppeteering, whereby we had cutouts of different characters acting out scenarios that we had planned. Through this, the children were able to learn about how to save water even at home and how water is a precious resource to us all. We even wrapped up with a Q&A session and they managed to answer our mini quiz.
Lastly, we concluded everything that they have learnt with a pledge. We printed out water droplets and passed them to the teacher one week beforehand and everything went smoothly. The children were able to follow our simple instructions of colouring the water droplet and writing a simple phrase, “Make Every Drop Count!” It was rewarding to see their artworks.
Class Reflections:
“Overall, it was a really good experience to interact with the children and the planning process was really smooth. It was fun practicing our dance. Although we faced issues like the lack of time and space for our planning, we overcame them by improvising on the spot. I feel like more periods could be dedicated to prepare for this.” - Reyes
“The experience was interesting as we managed to use puppeteering to teach the kindergarteners how to save water. It was fun during practice, but it was also tough as we had to coordinate the timing of when the different puppets had to move, while syncing the movements to the voice over. We also had to time the skit carefully to make sure the plot was easy to follow. Through everyone’s cooperation and patience and a lot of practice, we managed to get the timing accurately and thus able to perform the play accurately on the day itself” - Ryan
“I had an enjoyable time taking part in SL day and making the preschool kids happy. When planning our small skit, we sourced for cute ideas to picture to the kids and we ultimately chose a 'puppet show' skit concept. We based our skit on the life of Bryan and through a couple of scenarios, we taught the kids the importance of saving water. My concern was that the kids may have found the skit too short or boring, but through our skit, I saw the kids actively participating in our questions, as well as sitting and watching our Water Wally skit attentively. For that i was really happy and appreciated. We got through our skit with a couple of hiccups along the way like one of us dropping our props, but our quick thinking helped to salvage the situation, but nevertheless, the kids still enjoyed it :)” - Oliver
"SL day was a surprisingly enjoyable session as the preschoolers were really cooperative and encouraging. Despite not being able to meet face to face, the experience wasn't any less genuine and it was a memorable time for me. Planning was a bit difficult and I had to step out of my comfort zone but some of my group mates were understanding and the whole procedure went smoothly for the most part. We had to pick our slideshow and find a suitable aesthetic that was both eye-catching and entertaining, while choreographing a dance sequence that was both easy to follow and simple to learn. Overall, it was an experience that I would not forget.” - Sara
“I feel like our efficiency was quite good because we split up into different groups and we just focused on what each group needed to do, but still feel like some people were not enthusiastic but nonetheless still participated!!! On the day itself even though there were technical difficulties it’s something we can’t really foresee but still handled well and patiently! Everyone did their job well 👍🏼” - Keira
