Description of project:
We conducted an online zoom session for the elderly @ Lions Befrienders. We did a variety of activities with them.
For the morning session, we did origami where the elderly were taught how to fold a paper box. This was followed by some light exercises which allowed the elderly to move about, helping them in keeping fit while not putting too much strain on their body. The afternoon session was started off by sand art. Sand art kits were sent to the eldery prior to the activities. This allowed the elderly to express their creativity by adding sands of different colours to colour the picture.
The Service Learning day was finally closed off with the elderly trying to complete the puzzle sets, which were sent to them prior to the activities. The puzzles were famous landmarks in Singapore to commemorate National Day. The elderly were asked questions on the different landmarks like have they been there before or what were their experiences there like. This allows us to better connect with the elderly as we are able to listen to the stories the elderly were sharing.
Class Reflections:
Generally, the class thought that SL day was spent very meaningfully engaging the elderly in not just activities but also conversations. We could tell that the elderly felt comfortable even through zoom as they would often give us thumbs up signs to show that they were ready to move on to the next part of the activities. The elderly seemed to enjoy themselves as they would occasionally put on big smiles and hand hearts.
The class bonded over having to coordinate through zoom in the second session and took turns to speak over zoom in order to not confuse the elderly. Overall, our class is proud that we were able to have a relatively smooth run.
