Description of Project:
We have 3 activities for our SL project in partnership with the Lions Befrienders Senior Activity Centre. For the first activity, we taught the elderly how to fold origami. We taught them how to fold paper hearts, cranes and frogs .
For the second activity, we played “Old Maids'' card game with the eldery upon a demonstration and they had picked it up very quickly.
For the last activity, we decided to end it off with a bang with a workout with the elderly which can be done while they are seated. This is so that we could prevent any injuries from happening. For the workout video, we decided on the 2021 GetActive! Workout, as we felt it was very much suited with Singapore’s birthday right around the corner. Throughout the workout, we guided the elderly along.
Class Reflections:
Natasha:
It was my first time being in-charge of planning programmes like this so it was difficult at the start as I had no prior experience, however I soon got used to it and it got easier over time with the support of my classmates. This service learning day was very enriching and it taught me how to think on my feet and read the room as well as react to the residents. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with the elderly.
Humaira:
I was initially a bit apprehensive if the elderly would enjoy the activities we had planned out for them but it was very memorable when they understood the game and some of them really lifted the whole mood of the table.
Wenyin:
I felt that we really did a good job for the service learning. The given circumstances were tough yet I feel that the elderly had a lot of fun. Thus, it was a heartwarming activity and I enjoyed seeing all of us participating actively together.
Anjali:
We didn't expect the elderly to pick up the origami folding so quickly and they were all very earnest to learn more. Hence, we could have equipped ourselves with more origami folding skills.
Zoha:
We had to read the room and allocate more time for the activities that the elderly seemed to enjoy hence, we overran a bit on the activities.
