Description of Project:
Our project is about helping the elderly at Toa Payoh Care Corner and to show them support. The objective of the project is to promote Intergenerational bonding between youths and seniors. The type of project we did was Face to Face interactions at the centre. The theme is National Day Celebration. Firstly, by embracing the national day theme we started off with a sing along using national day songs. We played the chinese version of the national day songs as most of the elderly there were more fluent in chinese. Next, we played a bingo game which we had prepared ourselves by printing pictures of iconic singaporean foods and places in singapore. Lastly, we played a ball game where the elderly came forward and grabbed each end of a plastic. The objective was to make sure the ball did not touch them. We ended off with a conclusion in chinese.
Class Reflections:
I learnt empathy and teamwork as we collaborated to help plan the activities for the elderly.i think the elderly were happy with our tactics and some of us were able to develop friendships with the elderly by communicating with them and having a conversation with them. i learnt that we can improve on many things such as we could've been more prepared and practiced our chinese well as most of the elderly there were chinese speaking only and it was hard to break the language barrier without initial Not only that, we could've come up with more age appropriate games that were more suitable for the elderly as the ball game was too physical and could have potentially hurt an elderly if not done carefully.

We learnt that we should be better prepared and maybe even have trials in class before going to the care centre. We learnt that it is difficult to communicate with the elderly due to language barriers. we should have practice more in class and prepared to speak in chinese language
- Nicholas
I should be more active and help those who are in need of help. I learned that I need to communicate more with my peers. We did not properly execute some of the activities.
- Ryan
From this service learning project, we learned the values of discipline and resilience. Since we were left in-charge of the entire event, it became difficult for us to plan the activities and ensure that the elderly folks would enjoy their time spent. Regarding the interactions with the elderly folks, we had quite a bit of fun engaging in regular conversations with them and asking them about their everyday lives.
