Description of project:
Our class engaged in a virtual engagement session on Zoom with seniors from the NTUC Health Senior Day Care (Serangoon Central).
We carried out two activities on Zoom, a "Guess the Location" activity as well as a "Finger Painting" activity.
Our class prepared hand-outline templates for the finger painting activities where the seniors at the Senior daycare could follow along our instructions and create their own decorations to the hand template.
Our class also prepared a slideshow presentation to help explain activities to the seniors, including picture examples and explanations in both English and Chinese.
We carried out the zoom call in both English and Chinese in order to ensure everyone would be able to easily understand and be included in our activities.
Class Reflections:
In summary, our class was grateful that we were able to meaningfully engage, and hopefully entertained the elderlies through a simple yet interactive session.
Our class also was captivated when we saw our classmates present in a mother tongue. Though there were mishaps in our dry run, such as some slides not including english captions, or lapses in our explanations where we only spoke Chinese, we were able to quickly adapt, adjusting the slides quickly before the zoom and creating a short script to help ensure our explanations were easy to understand for everyone.
We were all touched deep down when several of the seniors were so actively participating. We were glad that we could hear active participation from the crowd when we carried out our Guess the location activity, where the seniors were enthusiastically shouting out their answers. There was also this particular senior in front of the camera who frequently turned to the camera to show off his and his friends art piece.
Overall, our class was glad that we were given this opportunity to interact with the seniors, as we felt we could give back to our seniors and also connect with them through our mother tongue language.
Through this short 1-hour segment, we truly understood what it meant to be a servant leader to our community. We hope that the session was able to make their day just a bit better, and that we have similar opportunities in the future.
