Description of project:
7 students from 20S19 and our CT went down to Kreta Ayer Senior Activity Centre to conduct our service learning project.
The project consists of 2 main components, the distribution of 50 care packs and musical performances for the elderly.
While the students who went down to the centre rehearsed for the performance, the rest of the class contributed by packing 50 care packs (provided by the school). Aside from packing care packs, the class also contributed by conducting a research on the activity centre to better prepare the class for the service learning day.
During the performance, there were 3 batches of seniors (as there’s limited space due to social distancing) we performed for. Each batch took roughly 15 minutes. We sang and danced along with the seniors.
Class Reflections:
Admittedly, some of us were nervous before the event as there were a lot of uncertainties on how well the performances were going to be executed and the level of excitement from the elderly.
That, added with the fact that we had to rehearse an extra song 10 minutes before the performance, made us anxious. However, when the first batch of elderly (there were roughly 8 of them) streamed in and we started greeting them, their smiles made us smile and carry on, as cliche as it sounds.
In every batch, there were always at least a few elderly that were highly encouraging by being enthusiastic. They would not only sing along, but also moved along following our lead.
Some of them talked to us and one elderly even took a video and cried at the end of the performance. Even though it was us who performed for them, they were the ones who touched and encouraged us.
At the end of the day, there were only smiles. This year’s service learning day was a fruitful one for 20S19.
