“Can Composting Be Sustainable in a Domestic Context?”

What did you do?

Simply put, I tried to make a home composting system on my balcony through this project. What brought me to tackle this project is my experience of last spring semester. In the PBL 2A class, my mate and I conducted fieldwork to survey invasive species and the availableness of their lives for composting. But at that time, I wondered if I should try on composting on my domestic scale before applying my ideas on a local or global scale. 

結論から述べると、今回のプロジェクトを通して、私はバルコニーで家庭用のコンポストを実践してみました。今回のプロジェクトに取り掛かろうと思ったきっかけは、前期の体験です。PBL2Aの授業で私と友人で外来種とそのコンポストにおける有用性を調査しました。ただその時、私は先に家庭内からコンポストを始めて、それから地域やグローバルスケールに自分の活動を広めていった方がいいのではないかと考えました。

Then, I tried to make a cardboard composting box, kept a record, and planted some spider plants in a pot filled up with the compost soil. First, in order to make the composting box, I prepared cardboard from the supermarket, peat moss, charcoal from a DIY shop, and daily kitchen waste. I wish I could have put kitchen waste into my composting box every day, but I don’t cook everyday. So I used the box as needed when I produced kitchen waste.

そこで、私はダンボールコンポストを作り、経過を記録そして、そのコンポストを使って鉢にオリヅルランを植えてみました。まず、コンポストを始める箱を作るために、スーパーからダンボール、ピートモスと炭をDIYショップから、そして日頃出る生ごみを用意しました。できれば、毎日生ごみをコンポストに入れたかったのですが、毎日料理をするわけではないので、必要に応じて生ごみが出た時に、コンポストを利用することとしました。

The kitchen waste which I threw away into the compost box was mainly vegetable peels, meat and fish bones, and used oil. This kitchen waste is usually dealt with as burnable trash. The first two weeks after I started composting, the box smelled as if I had put a sink strainer on the balcony, but after that, the smell became like soil. Since then, I found that lots of small insects like fleas lived in the box. It is difficult to explain how the kitchen waste was decomposing so I summarized what I put into the box and whether the waste was decomposed or not with a chart.

主に、コンポストに入れた生ごみは、野菜の皮、肉や魚の骨、使用済みの油など、料理で発生したゴミで普段は燃えるゴミに出してしまうものでした。最初の２週間は三角コーナーの臭いが広がっていましたが、それ以降は新しく生ごみを入れても、土のにおいが強かったです。その頃から、小さな昆虫も増え始めていました。ここで、コンポストに入れた生ごみの種類と分解の有無をわかりやすくするために表にまとめてみました。

Moreover, deHaan先生 offered to give me some spider plants, so I put lots of the kitchen waste into the box and stirred them well before the few weeks I get the plants. Because of the cold weather, I assumed that the microbes would become weaker than in the summer season, but I confirmed some insects lived and mold grew in the box, so I judged the waste had been decomposed.

また、deHaan先生から、オリヅルランをいただけるとのことになったので、それまではたくさんの生ごみをコンポストに入れ、よくかき混ぜました。冬で気温が寒く、コンポストの微生物の活動が弱まると思っていましたが、小さな昆虫が出入りしたり、カビが生えたりしていたので、生ごみは順調に分解されていると判断しました。

Then, I got some spider plants from deHaan先生 and tried to grow them with the composting soil. When I prepared the bowl for the plants, I wondered if I should buy a new plastic bowl that would not be sustainable, so I made the bowl with cardboard and plastic bags which were stocked in my house. The cardboard box was waterproof so it worked well. One month has passed, the small spider plants turned black so they looked like they had withered, but large plants are still alive. I gave them water twice a week because the soil is apt to freeze because of cold weather, but they could exist. Does this mean that the plants absorbed nutrients from the soil?

そして、deHaan先生からオリヅルランをもらって、実際にコンポストソイルでオリヅルランを育ててみました。育てるために使う鉢も新しく買ってしまうともったいないので、家にあった宅配用のダンボールとビニール袋で鉢を作り、そこに植えてみました。１か月経って、小さいものは葉先が黒くなって枯れてしまったようですが、大きな株は順調に生きています。冬に水を与えすぎると土が凍るので、３日に１回と雨水に頼りました。水をあまり与えていなくても生きているから、これはコンポストから栄養を吸い取った結果なのでしょうか。

When it became the middle of January, the composting box which I made first was deteriorating, so I made a new cardboard composting box. My balcony became a kind of small nature preserve.

１月中旬になって、最初に作ったダンボールコンポストが劣化してきたので、新しくダンボールコンポストを増設しました。私のバルコニーは生物の宝庫になりつつあります。

What were the outcomes?

For me, this project reduces the number of times that I take out the trash to the garbage disposal. When I threw away garbage including kitchen waste before I started this project, the garbage stinked and made me throw it away as soon as possible. But thanks to the amount of kitchen waste being reduced, I didn’t have to throw it away many times.

私にとって、このプロジェクトはゴミ出しの回数を減らす優れた結果に繋がりました。このプロジェクトを始める以前、ゴミ出しをする際、生ごみが非常に臭い、すぐにゴミ出しに行く必要がありました。しかし、プロジェクトによって生ごみの量が減らされたため、今まで程ゴミ出しに行く必要はなくなりました。

The result is ambiguous whether I could contribute to the net-zero-society, but I could definitely have a small effect on my society through reducing greenhouse gas.

結果は本当に脱炭素社会に貢献するものなのか曖昧ですが、小さな力が社会に温室効果ガス削減に貢献したと考えられます。

What Sustainable Development Goals does your project connect to?

My project connects to SDGs No.13.3 and No.15.4. 

SDGs No.13.3 said “Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning” and this point connects to my reducing greenhouse gas action and project based education experiencing like feeling real nature.

SDGs No.13.3は「気候変動の緩和、適応、影響軽減、および早期警告に関する教育、啓発、人的能力および制度機能を改善する。」であり、温室効果ガス削減とリアルな自然体験という意味で私のプロジェクトとつながるところがあります。

SDGs No.15.4 said “By 2030, ensure the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity, in order to enhance their capacity to provide benefits that are essential for sustainable development” and this is close to the action which the spider plants growing with home composting, then green lives expand.

SDGs No.15.4は「2030年までに生物多様性を含む山地生態系の保全を確保し、持続可能な開発にとって不可欠な便益をもたらす能力を強化する。」であり、これは、オリズルランが家のコンポストで育ち、緑が広がっていく様子とつながる。

What did you do well?

When I was on winter vacation and left Shizuoka for a while, I could not give water to the spider plants. In order to keep the water into the soil, I came up with the idea to make an automatic watering can using a plastic bottle. I made a small hole in the bottle cap and put it in the soil. Then the soil was naturally made wet with water.

冬休みの間、静岡から出ているときに、私はオリズルランに水をあげることができませんでした。ただ、土の中で水を維持するために、私はペットボトルを使った自動水やり機を思いつきました。ペットボトルの蓋に小さな穴を開けて、土に差し込めば、水が自然と土を湿らせてくれていました。

What could you have done better?

I wished I could have made my project broader not only for my balcony but also universities. Since I planned this project from last summer semester, I would have liked to collaborate with the university because our university creates lots of food waste even though they declare SDGs promotion. If I could collaborate with the two cafeterias, my project could be more effective at reducing the waste and greenhouse gas.

できれば、私のプロジェクトを家のバルコニーだけでなく大学にも広めたかったです。昨年の夏からプロジェクトを考えていて、私はぜひ大学と協力してフードロスを肥料に変えれば、大学のSDGs宣言を達成したいと考えていました。もし、上食と下食とコラボできたら、私のプロジェクトはもっとロスと温室効果ガス削減に効果があったでしょう。

As the proverb “he that stays in the valley shall never get over the hill.” goes, I am a little bit hesitant to make the project bigger.

ことわざの「井の中の蛙」というように、私は少しプロジェクトを大きくするのに遠慮するところがあると思っています。

What did you learn?

I learned and understood the reason why Japan is lagging behind in home composting. The main reason is the balcony is too small to start composing. Japan basically doesn’t have large land and a balcony with enough space. It is different from the United States and Europe. So, when Japanese people try composting, they face the problem of the lack of space. My project also showed us that my balcony is crowded with the composting box and plants. Furthermore, when summer comes, the compost must emit stinky smells. The space between the house and the neighbor's house in Japan is very small. Then, it might be a problem to deal with the smells.

日本でなぜ家庭用コンポストが遅れているのか理由を知り、納得しました。一番の理由は、ベランダが狭くてコンポストを始められないことです。日本は基本的に広い土地と十分なスペースのあるベランダがないはずです。アメリカやヨーロッパとは異なって、日本は土地が狭いため日本人がコンポストをやろうとすると、スペースがないという問題に直面するのです。私のプロジェクトでも、ベランダはコンポストボックスと植物で混雑していることがわかりました。さらに、夏になるとコンポストが臭い匂いを放つことです。日本では隣家との間隔が狭いです。そうすると、臭いの処理に困るかもしれません。

My idea to solve the smell problem is using two cardboard boxes and more charcoal. One box is used to make the composting and another box is used to cover the composting around. Also charcoal is used on the covering box and filled up around the box. Then the smell will be absorbed by charcoal. 環境サークル CO-CO makes something with abandoned bamboo so there is room to collaborate with them through making charcoal.

私の考えた臭い問題を解決する手段は2つの段ボール箱とより多くの炭を使うものです。まずひとつの箱はコンポスト用に、そしてもう一つの箱はコンポストの箱の周りを囲う用に使います。そして炭は２つ目の箱に敷き詰めます。そうすると炭が臭いを吸着して問題が解決すると考えられます。環境サークルCO-COは放置竹林の竹を使って何かモノを作っているので、コラボの余地があると考えられます。

How does this project connect to your future?

I think this project connects to my future job when I criticize SDGs greenwashing. It is because I found that there are lots of SDGs greenwashing when people try to compost something. For example, I saw a YouTube video which shared the new way of composting with their own developed composting bag which was made with plastic. Compositing is one of the ways to refrain from emitting CO2 though, if we use the additional plastic to compost something, I guess it is not sustainable. I know my project also uses plastic bags and cardboard boxes, but they are usually thrown away without efficient use. I think it is a problem to use the additional plastics to approach SDGs. Like that, I would like to analyze SDGs washing from my project experience even if I graduate from university.

このプロジェクトは、私がSDGs Washを未来の仕事で批判することにつながると思います。というのも、何かをコンポストしようとするとき、たくさんのSDGsウォッシングがあることに気づいたからです。例えば、YouTubeの動画で、プラスチックでできたコンポストバッグを使った新しいコンポストの方法を紹介していました。コンポストはCO2を排出しない方法のひとつですが、コンポストのために新しいプラスティックを使うのは、サステナブルとは言えないと思います。私のプロジェクトでもレジ袋やダンボールを使っていますが、普段は有効活用されずに捨てられています。SDGsに近づくために、プラスアルファのプラスチックを使うのは問題だと思います。このように、大学を卒業しても、プロジェクトの経験からSDGs Washを分析したいです。

How will this project be sustained/continued?

My parents’ house actually has a large gardening space and they plant lots of flowers in every season. So, if my balcony is almost filled up with the composting box, I will send the fertilizer to them. Then it will connect to sustainable gardening even if the space is not enough.

私の実家は大きなガーデニングスペースがあり、毎シーズン花植えをしています。なので、私の家で作ったコンポストを実家に届け、実家の花にコンポストで作った土を使えば、循環して花や植物が育っていくと考えられます。

What advice do you have for: future students, collaborators, other people?

This class is worth building relationships between you and your society even if you have finished taking all your class credits!　Do your best！

このクラスはたとえ単位が取り終わっていても、あなたの身の回りの社会に繋がる機会を与えてくれるのでとても価値があると思います！ 頑張って！
