What did you do?
We thought about the Sustainability Goals, and about what children could do to do something to reach the goals, then we created a playful frame “A Secret Agent Game” and missions for participants to complete.
Our main goal is to teach children the importance of the SDG’s without it becoming an unrelatable, boring subject. Hence, we created a game, where the students will become the “ Secret Agents of the Sustainability Goals”. Their goal is to complete the missions and become high level Secret Agents.
Please check the full explanation and missions here.
We decided to write small tasks that would be relevant for children. Our tasks have a sustainability goal theme. For example the missions in the first level are about well-being and education. In this way we hope to make children become aware of global issues. To make this process more interesting for them and make them believe that they are real spies there will be tips like “don’t show your card to anyone else” or “don’t reveal yourself”.
What were the outcomes?
Unfortunately, we were not able to actually implement out project, however it was an amazing journey for us. We started by brainstorming about the SDG’s. We also did not know much at first, hence it was also a learning journey for us too. I think it personally changed us too.
What Sustainable Development Goals does your project connect to?
Our tasks are related to
Good health and well being / Quality Education
No poverty / Zero hunger
Gender Equality / Reduced Inequalities
Responsible consumption
Climate action
Just for instance to explain the connection here is one of the tasks about 1st SDG goal: Identify the people who are not feeling well. They are undercover agents!
What did you do well?
We didn’t give up even when it was hard to continue due to being rejected. We had a vision for this project and maybe we could have changed it to fit the standards and do something general. However, I believe that we stood behind our idea and did our best to make it.
Also, I believe that we had a good synergy, and we worked without any problems. We sat together and brainstormed. I believe this was also a learning opportunity for us since we come from very different backgrounds and education systems.
What could you have done better?
We could have included more details, we could have found another way to bring our project to life.
Our first intention was to do a month-long project, however due to logistic problems, we had to downsize a lot. Which is totally okay, but I believe that maybe we could have done a better job at downsizing.
What did you learn?
We have learned that designing a project for a foreign audience is hard because of the cultural and local issues. However, at the same time, this is what challenges you to go above and beyond. Thanks to having some issues, it made us think and understand better both the SDG’s and the cultural differences.
How does this project connect to your future?
As people who are interested in both games and the SDG’s, I believe it was a great first step. Personally for me, Evra, I plan to become an educator in the future, and it was interesting for me to think about it. For instance the SDG's hold another importance for Turkish people since our country is not exactly the most advanced country, hence it is easy to understand and relate to it. However, for Japanese people I thought that it might be harder to relate since they don't exactly face such problems in their everyday life. Therefore, as an educator, it was my responsibility to make my audience understand and relate to them. I think this helped me to further develop my empathy skills.
How will this project be sustained/continued?
We will make a small presentation to give children the opportunity to learn our project and attract their attention. In the end we will leave contact details if they want to keep in touch with us.
We also want to share this project online. We want educators and students to be able to use this project and even improve it further.
What advice do you have for: future students, collaborators, and other people?
Don’t be shy to try new things in your life, be confident in your actions, but don’t forget about people around you, maybe they need your help.
Sometimes your project will face unforeseeable problems, but I think it is important to understand that not only the outcome matters in projects, but also the journey and what you learn along the way matters a lot. This is what makes you grow as a person, and as they say, practice makes perfect.
