Learning Objectives
For Science Classes
- Learning objectives
Knowledge & Skills - A learning objective is an explicit statement regarding what knowledge and skills students will be able to demonstrate at the end of the lesson or unit.
Measurable / Observable - Learning objectives should focus on measurable and observable outcomes students will be able to demonstrate, not what form the instruction will take.
SWBAT -Learning objectives begin with the phrase: “Students Will Be Able To (SWBAT)”
Measurable action verb - Use verbs which describe an action that can be observed and that are measurable within the teaching time frame (e.g., via a post-test).
Precise - Clearly written learning objectives can both provide students precise statements of what is expected of them and provide guidelines for assessing student progress.
3-Dimensional - Learning objectives are framed in the context of content students (DCI) will know, but what students can do with this science content as related to Science and Engineering Practices (SEP) and Crosscutting Concepts (CCC).
Build towards PEs - Multiple learning objectives work towards meeting Performance Expectations (PE) or other large scale objectives.
