Memory
Techniques for improving memory of principles and facts
Short-Term Memory
Short-term memory (or "primary" or "active memory") is the capacity for holding information in mind in an active, readily available state for a short period of time. The duration of short-term memory (when rehearsal or active maintenance is prevented) is believed to be in the order of seconds. How many unrelated items can be stored in short-term memory.
After the entire class has completed the short term memory test and survey, examine the results and discuss the results.
What appears to be the maximum number of unrelated items people can retain in short term memory?
Serial Position Effect
You are going to be presented with 20 terms. Do not write anything down until all 20 terms have been read. Once the last term has been read, write down as many terms as you can remember. When ready to begin, open the recording of the list of terms.
After writing down all terms that you can remember, click on all of the terms you recalled correctly using this form.
Examine the class data and summary data. In the quickwrite, describe the patterns (in terms of position within the list) you observe in terms of which terms are remembered the most frequently and which are remembered the least.
Is class data consistent with the serial position effect?
Sequence Recollection
The instructor will display a slide show of a series of nonsense sequences of letters or numbers. Record every sequence, or portion of sequence, that you can recall after the slide is no longer displayed. .
Discuss the significance of the class data. Enter your observations and hypotheses as directed in the quickwrite.
Chunking
Chunking is a cognitive strategy where information is organized into manageable units or "chunks" to improve memory and comprehension. By breaking down large amounts of information into smaller, more meaningful pieces, individuals can more easily process and remember complex material. For example, when memorizing a long string of numbers, like a phone number, chunking involves grouping the numbers into smaller sets (e.g., area code, prefix, and line number). This strategy allows for more efficient encoding and retrieval of information, making it an effective tool for learning and problem-solving tasks across various domains.

Create a model
Create a flowchart model of human memory using the free resource, diagrams.net. (diagrams.net (previously draw.io) is a cross-platform graph drawing software developed in HTML5 and JavaScript. Its interface can be used to create diagrams such as flowcharts, wireframes, UML diagrams, organizational charts, and network diagrams
