Short-Term Memory

Short-term memory (or "primary" or "active memory") is the capacity for holding  information in mind in an active, readily available state for a short period of time. The duration of short-term memory (when rehearsal or active maintenance is prevented) is believed to be in the order of seconds. How many unrelated items can be stored in short-term memory.

Chunking

Chunking is a cognitive strategy where information is organized into manageable units or "chunks" to improve memory and comprehension. By breaking down large amounts of information into smaller, more meaningful pieces, individuals can more easily process and remember complex material. For example, when memorizing a long string of numbers, like a phone number, chunking involves grouping the numbers into smaller sets (e.g., area code, prefix, and line number). This strategy allows for more efficient encoding and retrieval of information, making it an effective tool for learning and problem-solving tasks across various domains.
