Matthew 7:9-12
The Golden Rule
9 "Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! 12 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Matthew 22:36-40
The Greatest Commandment
36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
When we read these verses in Matthew, Jesus tells us, "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."...He tells us that the greatest commandment is “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’...This is the first and greatest commandment...And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’...All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”...In both of these verses He tells us that they sums up the Law and the Prophets or all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments...Therefore these are very powerful verses...
The premise of the Golden Rule is that in everything we do, we are to do to others what you would have them do to you...So we are first to love ourselves and be kind to ourselves...Without loving ourselves and being kind to ourselves, it is with great difficulty that we can love and do good unto others...So if we are burdened with worries of the past or the future or with no self-compassion for ourselves we will find it very hard to help others...When we trust in His unfailing LOVE we can find it better to love others...But if we cannot we kind to ourselves, we cannot be kind to others...
