Matthew 6:19-24
Treasures in Heaven
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
In our lives it seems we search for security, the shiny, the flashing, maybe even money...We look for things that grab our immediate attention or satisfy an immediate desire...We often choose to please a friend or a group...And we do our best to choose the best, or so we think...And as we move through life and grow -we might that these different things we have chosen and held on to are really not things that you can actually hold on to, but are just things passing...We have chosen things that often do not last...
Treasures are not in earthly things, but treasures are found in the heavenly things...Earthly treasures are finite and temporary...We grow tired of the temporary material things...But those things we hold in our hearts last forever...Love and friendship come to mind...
So when Jesus teaches us that there are things that last, we should listen with great interest...When He tells us that we should be less concern with things that grab our attention or desires, but look for the things that are heart-felt we should take notice...Jesus teaches us the eternities...He believes in the sacred and the holy...There is something about what He says and teaches that make us feel good, feel right and lasting...
