Matthew 7:13-14
In Following Jesus We Go Through a Narrow Gate
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
When we follow Jesus, we enter it through the narrow gate and follow the narrow road...This points out that Jesus has an unconventional path...The narrow path and gate emphasize the spiritual nature of His kingdom, the need for surrender, and the transformative power of faith...The Narrow Way is Unconventional and sometimes strange...Jesus contrasts the "wide gate and broad road that leads to destruction" with the "small gate and narrow road that leads to life."...The wide road represents the easy path, the one that aligns with worldly values and and our earthly desires...The wide gate and road are the path of least resistance, where conformity to the world is the norm and what we normally choose to do...The narrow road, on the other hand, is the path less traveled...It requires a conscious decision to go against the grain, to prioritize spiritual values over worldly ones...It's unconventional because it often involves sacrifice, self-denial, and a willingness to embrace hardship for the sake of following Him...We see this is His first Sermon of His Ministry, the Sermon on the Mount, how He teaches us counterintuitively about earth and our earthly ways...
Jesus tells us that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and His Way cannot be forced and is not like our earthly ways...His Way requires an active participation in following Him as He leads us through sometimes odd, and oftentimes not what we expect, and in places we might never expect or want to be...And sometimes how we get in these places, they only become clear when we study Him and pray to Him...And in our studies and our reflections on His Ways, in where we are and where we have been, we then see a glimpse of His world...Only when we have a relationship with Him, do we follow in our minds where He is taking us or has taken us...His Ways and Means are different, because He is of Another World...He and His Kingdom are from above while we are from earth...His World is Spiritual and our World is of the flesh and is earthly...Yet, somehow His world is Real and the Absolute Reality that we search...
Jesus’ Way is not of this world, and navigating it requires a deeper relationship with Him, a willingness to surrender our expectations, and a trust that even in the midst of the unexpected, He is leading us toward ultimate reality...He is leading us to an Eternal World, because He is Eternal Life...
Jesus' declaration, "I am the Way, the Truth, and the life" (John 14:6), is not merely a statement of personal identity; it's an invitation to a journey, a life-long earthly journey that often defies earthly logic and conventional wisdom...His way is not a well-paved highway but a path less traveled one...His Way, His path is a journey of faith that requires us to relinquish control and embrace the unknown...To follow His path, we must take the narrow road in life...
The world operates on principles of power, ambition, material things, and self-preservation...We strive for security, wealth, and recognition, often measuring success by worldly standards...But Jesus' Way challenges these very notions...He calls us to humility, sacrifice, and service, values that often seem counterintuitive to worldly success...
Following Jesus is not a passive acceptance of doctrine; it's an active participation in His life, a willingness to walk alongside Him, even when the path leads us through unfamiliar territory and uncomfortable terrain...It's a journey of constant learning, unlearning, and relearning, as we strive to align our will with His...
Often, the places where Jesus leads us are not the places we would have chosen for ourselves, and some we do not even want to go...He may lead us into situations that challenge our comfort levels, expose our weaknesses, and force us to rely entirely on Him...These experiences, though often difficult, are essential for our spiritual growth...It's in these "odd" and "unusual" places that we learn to trust in His guidance, to surrender our own agendas, and to discover the true meaning of discipleship...
The process of understanding God's will is not always immediate or obvious...So Trusting in Him is very important...It requires a commitment to prayer, to studying His Word, and to cultivating a deep relationship with Him...It's through these disciplines that we gain glimpses of His world, His perspective, and His ultimate purpose for our lives...
The journey of faith is not always easy, but it's a journey worth taking...It's a journey that leads us to the heart of God, to the source of all Truth, and to the Ultimate Fulfillment of our deepest desires...It's a journey that transforms us from the inside out, making us more like Him and preparing us for the eternal glory that awaits us in His Presence...
