Matthew 6:5-15
Prayer
5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.’
14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
1 Thessalonians 5:12-28
Pray Continually
12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil.
23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us. 26 Greet all God’s people with a holy kiss. 27 I charge you before the Lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
At first glance, Jesus' warning against babbling repetitions in prayer (Matthew 6:7) might seem to contradict Paul's exhortation to pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:17)…However, a closer examination reveals that these two biblical principles are not mutually exclusive but rather complement each other…
There is an importance of focused prayer…Jesus' teaching emphasizes the need for intentional and for us to have focused and sincere prayers as He teaches us about praying in the LORD's Prayer…He warns against using repetitive, empty phrases that lack sincerity…Instead, He encourages us to approach God with specific requests, heartfelt gratitude, and genuine humility…By focusing our minds and hearts on God, we can engage in meaningful and effective prayer…
There is a need for us to have constant communication with our Father…Paul's exhortation to pray continually highlights the importance of maintaining a constant connection with God…This doesn't necessarily mean that we should be in a state of formal prayer 24/7, but rather that we should cultivate a prayerful mindset throughout the day…We can pray silently in the midst of our daily activities, expressing gratitude to our Father, seeking His guidance, and interceding for others…
So we should have a balanced and focused and continuous prayer mentality in our lives…To reconcile these two seemingly contrasting ideas, we must understand that both focused and continuous prayer are essential for a vibrant spiritual life…
Focused Prayer: This involves setting aside specific times for prayer, where we can concentrate on our requests and praise God…It's a time for deep communion with God, where we can pour out our hearts and seek His guidance…
Continuous Prayer: This involves maintaining a constant awareness of God's Presence throughout the day…It's a lifestyle of prayer, where we can lift up our concerns and praises to God in the midst of our daily activities…
By balancing these two approaches, we can experience the fullness of prayer…We can pray with intention, focusing on specific needs and desires, while also maintaining a constant connection with God throughout the day…
Ultimately, the goal of prayer is to draw closer to God…By praying with both focus and continuity, we can deepen our relationship with Him and experience the transformative power of His LOVE…
