Juying Secondary School

It was year 2010 when I first heard from my friend through word-of-mouth about Juying Secondary School. I was sceptical about it as I was not so sure about the school system and the life of a secondary school student. There were lots of ups and downs when I first enrolled into Juying Secondary School as I was not a good student. Before I joined Juying Secondary School, I was an extremely rebellious student at Boon Lay Garden Primary School (BLGPS). These bad habits attributed to my attitude when I was in Secondary 1, a student who always got into trouble with the teachers. My circle of friends was usually those who mingled around the neighbourhood of the school and engaged in activities like smoking and playing truant. In 2012, due to bad companions, I got myself into trouble when I was in Secondary 2 in the vicinity of Pioneer Secondary School when a group of us fought with the students from Pioneer Secondary. Through this incident, many of us got into Boys’ Home and probation – A programme to help us to transform ourselves into better citizens of the society instead of facing incarceration.

My life started to make a turnaround as I received support from my wonderful teachers, counsellors and probation officer. They encouraged me along the way and gave me the opportunity to lead, serve and excel. A few examples would be that I was given the opportunity to lead the Secondary 1 Orientation Camp and the Overseas Expedition Programme @ Cambodia for the class of 3T1. With all their unwavering support, I managed to top the cohort in the GCE ‘N’ Levels 2015. They are the ones that made me who I am today.

The teachers at Juying Secondary School inculcate R3IGHT values into the students and ensure these values are portrayed at all times within the school compound, and outside the neighbourhood. This high level of discipline has brought the school to greater heights. They will go the extra mile and ensure that each and every one of the student receives the right treatment and attention needed to maximise their learning in a conducive environment. There are a few teachers that I will like to express my gratitude to.

Mr Chuah / PE – For entrusting me and giving me the opportunity to be a part of the team for Secondary 1 Orientation Camp. He motivated and inspired me a lot to push myself beyond my limits. Through his wise words, I managed to pull through the tide and led the Secondary Ones. The team that I led even emerged as the Champions for their wonderful performance during the Camp Fire.

Mr Surya – For pulling my grades up from an Ungraded to an A. Through his endless speeches, he has taught me more than what can be found in a book and brought my understanding of Mathematics to a whole new level. He used real-life situations and allowed us to think out of the box to ensure that we understood how to apply the concepts in different circumstances. Despite his health, he never gave up on me even though I was not an A student and this has motivated me to do even better in life.

Mrs Amy Yeo – For being my cushion to lean on whenever I fell and for providing me with the assurance that I was not alone in fighting through the tide. She was the one who motivated me when I was at my lowest, went to my house when I played truant and supported me when I was facing financial difficulties. She is one of the most amazing teachers that I have ever come across and I believe she will continue to impact the lives of many.

Mr Chen Guowei – I have always been the last in Chinese classes since primary school. Despite receiving an Ungraded when I was in Secondary 3, he did not give up on me. Instead he bought me Chinese books which taught me the simpler terms to understand the different strokes of the language. He also ensured that I was always at the best of my conduct and gave me loads of attention when I was at the stage of turning over a new leaf. In fact, he never stopped believing in me and always told me that I could do it no matter what as long as I am hungry enough to chase after it.

Mr Ow Kwok Leong – He inspired me to become someone better through his wise words. He gave me the opportunity to grow and made me understand how complacency could lead to one’s downfall. In addition, he also gave me useful advice on how I could improve myself further as a leader and introduced me to Jurong GRC when I realised that I had the passion to serve the community. His constant presence assured me of his unwavering support in times when I felt like giving up.

The skills that I had acquired from JYSS have given me a competitive edge over the others. For example, one of my modules in ITE College West (Finance Services) was Customer Service (CSV). It is a compulsory module for all year-one business students. The knowledge and skills I obtained in school allowed me to apply it during roleplays and scenarios given by the lecturers at this course. The leadership skills I acquired have also allowed me to lead my fellow Student Councillors in ITE College West and guide them to becoming future servant leaders.
