In Juying, exemplary teachers made stressful lessons in class more interesting bearable and in addition, events like the Secondary 3 VIA Overseas Program and the Secondary One Orientation coloured my once monotonous school life.
During our Secondary 3 VIA overseas programme, I actually felt blessed for our class to have been given the opportunity to go to China, Shantou because in the current Junior College that I am studying in, I learnt that there are not many other schools who get to have a chance to go to countries further than Indonesia, Malaysia or Cambodia for their VIA project.
Our class took the initiative to plan for the activities of this programme which took almost half a year together facilitated by our form teacher. To the class, it was definitely a fresh experience as it was our first time planning for an outdoor and an overseas project. During the short 4D3N trip, we conducted a cultural exchange and had the chance to teach the China Chinese students English. In addition, my class definitely bonded closer as a result on only having each other to depend on for the trip.
There was also the Secondary One Orientation where my batch was the first one to have both class leaders as well as the prefectorial board plan for the event under the supervision of a group of capable and competent teachers - Mr Chuah Soon An, Mr Soh Joon Wei, Ms Ong Xue Qing as well as Mr Kelvin Teo. Because it was the first time that such a system was set up and with many of us unsure of how to plan for such a large scale event, the team experienced many difficulties in drafting out the specific programmes and the programme flow.
However, with the teacher’s support and the student leader’s teamwork, the event turned out to be a success which many of the freshman enjoyed.
Out of the many teachers in Juying who made my life in secondary school so enjoyable, I would like to mention two of them who made the most impact in my life; Mr Yeo Yong Kiat and Mr Mustafa Ali.
Mr Yeo is the most friendly and approachable teacher in Juying who is always trying his best to come up with lesson plans that cater to his student’s needs. Even though he only came in when I was in secondary 3, he established good rapport with his students which explains his popularity among the studentss. I still remember the times when he would stay back with my classmates and I till late evening in school to have consultation for us to clarify our doubts.
In addition, if our consultation ended early, he would sometimes address some of the challenging questions posed that are relevant to the syllable but not further explained in the textbook or give us life lessons and advice for after secondary school life. We could be discussing about subject combinations in junior colleges, poly courses that will be in demand in the future as well as going for internships in good companies during the holidays so that we will have a better idea of our target in life to motivate ourselves to do better for our O level. His advices definitely helped me and I am sure, many others, to overcome some of the difficulties in our school life.
In my opinion, his patience, capability and openness to share his experience make him a commendable teacher.
