Chumash Skills
Kriah
Please try to practice reading once a day for about 10 minutes. Here are some fun ideas for working with those skills in different ways and to keep the kids engaged in reading:
1) Silly reading: You can tell your child to read a line like a frog, a princess, a baby or any silly thing you can come up with.
These cards are a free download with an account, or, if you want, contact Mrs. Yolkut and she can email you a pdf: http://www.chinuch.org/item_detail/Dramatic-Kriya-Cards
2) Echo reading: You read the word first and your child repeats. You can do this straight forwardly or you can tell them to do the opposite of you - if you whisper, they read loud, if you read in a low voice, they read in a high voice etc.
3) Writing words: Say a word, and have your child write it the way that they hear it. They may benefit from being able to look at a chart of the aleph beis while they do it, in case they are having trouble retrieving a sound. This activity helps with the "phonetics" of Hebrew - the sound to letter connection. This is especially fun when you use different mediums to write on, like a white board, ipad drawing app or sidewalk chalk.
4) Bingo- You say a word that is on their sheet and they look for it. You can use little pieces of paper as bingo markers, or candies to make it extra fun.
5) Teaching - The kids can be the teacher and you can be the student.
6) Missing Words - Read aloud and intentionally miss a word - then they can work to find the word that was missing!
