**Be sure to follow along with the step-by-step YouTube video inspiration and/or the written out lessons.

**And don’t forget to check out all of the Online Resources to help with inspiration!

  1. Make One Inch Squares.
Be sure to follow along with the video lesson guidance and how to do this step especially! You are creating your GRID with a ruler and pencil. Lightly, draw the grid with one inch squares. Each square will be called a “cell.” You start with your vertical lines, then your horizontal. Follow along the steps of the video!

  2. Outline Basic Shapes.
Outline basic shapes of a face. You can create this person from your imagination, use a reference photograph, or look in the mirror and make a self-portrait! Lightly draw a face throughout your grid filling your page with a head shape, face, ears, neck, and hair. Abstract these forms with loose free-form shapes (check out the video lesson guidance).

  3. Color the Eyes.
Whether you are using painting or drawing materials, fill in the eyes first. Take your time. The eyes are the “most important” part of a portrait.

  4. Block in Light Colors.
Throughout your face, add lighter colors throughout the free form shapes within each cell. Switch up your colors.

  5. Fill in Face, Hair, and Background.
Fill in the rest of the face with various values of colors. Then fill in the hair and background with medium dark and darker colors. Take. Your. Time.
