  1. Turn Paper Vertical.
Remember, vertical is turning it tall instead of wide. This is the “portrait orientation” of your paper.

  2. Sketch Background.
Make sure you watch the video lesson guidance! First, with your pencil, lightly sketch out the horizon line (the line that makes the sky touch the ground), the flowing lake, the grass around the lake, the walkway that the people are walking on, and the railing attached to the walkway.

  3. Sketch People.
In The Scream, there are a few “human figures”- the couple in the background, and then the “person” in the front, the main character of the (almost) most expensive and iconic painting of all time!

  4. Color Sky, Water, and Land.
Whether you are using paint or drawing supplies, add color to the sky first- use warm colors for the sky (red, oranges, yellows, pinks). Add cool colors to the water and land, but use different cool colors for each to separate them. Use flowing, expressive lines to make it look curvy like the original The Scream! Add browns and greys to the walkway and railing too.

  5. Color People! The Scream!
The last step is to add color to the “people.” Use cool colors for these figures too. Use darker cool colors in the main person in the front to bring them forward. The most important part of this painting- The Scream expression! Do not forget to add that shocked face to the main character of your The Scream recreation. This is what will make it worth $120million! Right?
