  1. Understand Abstract Expressionism.
Make sure you understand that “Abstract Expressionism” is art that does not have to “look like anything” and you don’t have to “get it.” “Non-Objective” basically means “no object.” It is made based off of emotion and feeling!

  2. First Bold Marks!
Make your first marks without thinking. Choose the biggest paint brush you have, the brightest color you have and just go for it. It doesn’t have to look like anything! This is the start of this painting just looking like your painting, and nothing else.

  3. Change and Mix Color.
Bring a new color into the project. You can mix it in with your first color. You can add white, or black, to make values of these two colors. Add and mix as many colors as you wish.

  4. Switch Your Brush.
Use as many brushes as you want for this- big, medium, and small; flat or round. Switch up your brush in between colors to make your bold marks unique and different.

  5. Fill Up Paper!
Make your project paper disappear from your non-objective brushstrokes! Fill the page. Let loose with this!
