Ensor's most famous etching goes back to a reproduction of the choir of Aachen Cathedral. Ensor completely copied the choir section from a drawing by Gerrit Hulseboom from 1836. He added two towers and thus created the magnificent structure that dominates the whole print. The middle and front are completely taken over by an almost indistinguishable crowd. In the background, the military band is advancing. In the foreground, the space is taken up by burlesque and exotic carnival guests.
