Boy with lamp

Shortly after leaving the academy, Ensor painted ordinary people from his surroundings, such as fishermen, sailors and shop girls. This Boy with lamp, rendered in black and ochre hues, with texture due to the use of a palette knife, is the first painting by Ensor to be acquired by a museum, fifteen years after its execution.
