Map suitability: The full extent of the Mt Korong Nature Conservation Reserve, including the area covered by the older Korong Spurs map. This is world class middle distance terrain. One of the nicer granite maps around (surpassed only by Mt Egbert, which is surpassed only by Wehla Hill). The exception is the steep slope on the south of Mt Korong. It serves a purpose as a route choice obstacle, allowing quality long distance course setting as well.
The first use of this site was for an Australian Middle Distance Championship. Adjoining private land was used for parking and for some of the course. All adjoining land was later purchased by Environmental Heritage properties. Cleared areas were direct sown to native trees, covenants created to protect the vegetation and the land subdivided into bush blocks for subsequent sale to the environmentally minded. All blocks have now been sold. It is now unlikely that we will ever get permission to map the remaining granite on private land. Rare orchids have been identified on these granite blocks.
Land Manager: Parks Victoria
Access issues:
No parking inside the park boundary other than designated parking area..
Environmental sensitivity required more than usual.
Dogs on lead at all times. Needs to be communicated in event information.
Indigenous heritage sites need to be respected. These are available to course setters.
Assembly sites:
Private property on the east of the map before the gate. Permission must be sought from the landowner. Contact committee.
Mt Korong Picnic area. This has no facilities other than a parking area. Sufficient parking for 25-30 cars if parking is efficient. Competitor instructions.
Safety Issues: Some large cliffs on the steeper areas of the Mount. Wet rock can be slippery.
Map status: Korong Spurs was mapped by Alex Tarr in the early 2000s. The extended map was created in 2021-23 by Neil Barr using Wilmott photogrammetry and a gps enabled tablet. This included a remap of the old map. Significant vegetation changes.
