Acts 6:1-7
The Choosing of the Seven
1In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word."
5This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
7So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.
The early number of Christians began to increase quickly...The Twelve and others had been able to take care of all things in this group...But as their numbers became larger, this put more time on tasks such as getting food to the widows...
There was a discussion of the Grecian Jews and the Hebraic Jews...The Jews of Greece descent were not being treated the same as the Jews of Hebrew descent when it came to the distribution of food...The Twelve disciples were trying to spread the word...The more time they helped other people in the distribution of food the less time they had for spreading the word of God...
The Twelve disciples thought if they could delegate seven workers or helpers to assist in this distribution of food they would have more time to minister the word to others...They wanted to choose seven men to help people who needed food...
The ones chosen should be men full of faith and followers of the LORD... They chose seven who were qualified to help the widows...They prayed for them and laid their hands on them to be gracious and service the members...
The Twelve now would have more time for prayer and more time to spread the word of Jesus...When you fill your days up with many things and do not have time for prayer and the LORD, it is time to step back in your life and rearrange and delegate, if possible...That is exactly what the Twelve disciples did...The church grew quickly (back then) because of the Acts of the Apostles...
It still grows today because of the actions they took to spread the word among not only to their initial group, but to others who would hear their eyewitness stories and pass them down from generation to generation...
