Acts 2:22-24
St. Peter tells the crowd God raised Jesus from the dead
22"Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.
Fifty days after Jesus was executed, it is Pentecost...Jesus after His resurrection, stays is seen on earth for forty days...He ascends to heaven...So ten days after His ascension is the Pentecost...St. Peter, who was one of the Twelve disciples of Jesus is talking to the men of Israel...The Pentecost is here and the Holy Spirit has filled the Twelve disciples...They are speaking in different languages (tongues)...Jesus has told them that the Holy Spirit would be coming...It is now here...
St. Peter is the one who addresses the crowd...He is filled with the Holy Spirit...He has been with Jesus for approximately three years...He has been a witness to Jesus' miracles, wonders, and signs, which God did through Him...Jesus did these miracles, wonders, and signs among the people...The people saw them, this was not hidden...
St. Peter saw Jesus' arrest...He was there when all this happened and saw Jesus after His death, after the resurrection...It was impossible for death to keep its hold on Jesus...St. Peter was one of the witnesses, as were many in this crowd that he is addressing...
Three thousand people would become followers of "The Way" this day...It was the beginning of the Christian Church...The word Christian and Jesus followers later would be nicknamed Christians...This was first in Antioch (followers to be called Christians)...Jesus followers, who were originally called followers of The Way, would then become known as Christians...
