Luke 24:50-53
The Ascension
50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God.
Mark 16:9-20
The Ascension
9 When Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him and who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.
12 Afterward Jesus appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. 13 These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them either.
14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
Acts 1:1-11
Jesus Ascends to Heaven
1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”
7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.
10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.”
St. Luke gives us a brief account of Jesus' ascension, and then goes into more detail in the first chapter of Acts about Jesus ascending into heaven...He ascends on the fortieth day after His resurrection...Jesus ascends and is taken up to heaven and is sitting at the right hand of God...The Ascension of Jesus was a dramatic exit by Jesus from earth to heaven...One lasting and eternal departure that the disciples would never forget...As the disciples seen Him rise in the sky, they probably could imagine Him going and being back in heaven, with His Father...He is the One who was to come to the earth and dwell among us, and He is the Christ of Heaven...
Jesus ascends into heaven alive to see His Father, and His Glory...Jesus was taken by His Father into heaven alive...
The last thing the Disciples said and ask Jesus was about the Kingdom of Israel...The Disciples gathered around Him and asked Him, “LORD, are You at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?”...The Disciples now knew His power and were asking Him would He restore the Kingdom of Israel...This was how they thought and what they thought...Jesus said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by His own authority...But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”...The Disciples were given a Great Commission by Jesus to be His Jesus said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight...The Disciples were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them...“Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky?...This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen Him go into heaven.”...
Jesus ascending into heaven alive completes His time on earth...
And the Great Commission continues with today's believers and God's current disciples...Two thousand years later we see the God is very patient and wants us to trust Him and have faith in Him and His Son...
