We started off class by reviewing all the colors and the numbers 1-20.

Then, we learned 10 new numbers, so they should know the first 30 numbers.

April 12

We started off by reviewing all of the colors in Hindi and the numbers 1-10. Then, we learned the numbers 11-20, and terms for relatives.

March 8

Today we finished learning all the matras, as listed below.

  • ए (एड़ी- heel)-े-के

  • ऐ (ऐनक- glasses)-ै-कै

  • ओ (ओखली- mortar)-ो-को

  • औ (औरत- women)-ौ-कौ

  • अं (अंगूर- grape)-ं-कं

Then, since we have completed all the letters and matras, we began reading simple sentences from their Kilkari book. Please make sure their blue workbooks are completely filled out, and that they are bringing their Kilkari books to class.


March 1

Today we reviewed the letters, and then started learning all the matras!

  • अ (अनार-pomegranate)-क (ka)

  • आ (आम-mango)-ा- का (kaa)

  • इ (इमली-tamarind)-ि-कि (ki)

  • ई (ईख- sugarcane)-ी-की (kee)

  • उ (उल्लू-owl)- ु-कु (ku)

  • ऊ (ऊन- wool)-ू-कू

Then we practiced writing a few of the kids names that have all the letters and matras we already know.


February

February 16

Our class presentation is next week. Please make sure your kids are ready and dressed in Indian clothes and at the temple by 9:30 next Sunday.

We started off class by learning some words with no matras, as we have fully completed the letters.

  • फ (pha)+ल (la)=फल (fruit)

  • क (ka)+ल (la)= कल (tomorrow/yesterday)

  • ह (ha)+ल (la)= हल (solution to a problem)

  • ब (ba)+ल (la)=बल (strength)

  • प (pa)+ल (la)=पल (moment)

  • गरम (garam)- hot

  • रथ (rath)- chariot

  • शलगम (shalgam)- turnip

  • नटखट (natkhat)- naughty

  • छत (chat)-roof

  • जप (jap)- chant


Then we practiced for our Presentation next week.


The kids in the magic trick group should be prepared to follow along with this script:

Namaste everyone! Aaj hum aapko ek finger trick dhikayenge. Did you know that all of us 11 fingers? Let us show you.

Hold up 10 fingers and start counting to 10, but skip the number three and go straight to four.

Ek do char panch che sath aht no dus gyara

Kya aap sab ko mazaa aaya? Thank you!


The kids in the poem group should be prepared to say this poem:

Machli jal ki rani hai

Jeevan uska paani hai

Haath lagao gey, dar jayegi

Bahar nikaalo gey, mar jayegi

January 19

The kids will have a test on the letters क-श, numbers १-१०, and sentences/words they have learned so far. The test will be sent out for practice this week. Please make sure they practice te test, and are finished with the letters क-श in their workbooks.

Then, we learned the letters य (ya), र (ra), ल (la), व (wa), श (sha), and the following words with them.

य - ya

  • यश (yash)- fame

र - ra

  • रथ (rath)- chariot

  • रचना (rachana)- creation

  • रानी (rani)- queen

ल - la

  • लट्टू (lattu)- top

  • लड्डू (laddu)- sweet ball

व - wa

  • वषा (varsha)- rain

  • वन (van)- forest

श - sha

  • शलगम (shalgam)- turnip

  • शक्कर (shakkar)- sugar

Finally, we practiced for our presentation on February 23rd.


January 12

Today we had parent-teacher conferences, and it was very nice to see all the parents! We talked about our schedule for the rest of the year, including our presentation with Hindi Level A2 on February 23rd. Please let us know as soon as possible if your child cannot make it on that day. In order to prepare for the presentation, our class will be going until 12:30 to provide practice time.

Then we learned the letter म and practiced some every day words listed below.

  • म (ma)

  • मोर (mor)- peacock

  • मटर (matar)- peas

  • मछली (machhali)- fish

  • माँ (maa)- mom


  • दूध (doodh)- milk

  • पानी (paani)- water

  • चाय (chai)- tea

January 5

Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had a great holiday break. Today we learned four new letters- प (pa), फ (pha), ब (ba), and भ (bha).

The words we learned for each are listed below:

प:

  • पतंग (patang)- kite

  • प्याली (pyali)- cup

फ:

  • फल (phal)- fruit

  • फूल (phool)- flower

ब:

  • बकरी (bakri)- goat

November 24

Today we learned five new letters- त,थ,द,ध,न, along with the following words for each.

November 17

Today we learned the letters ठ,ड, and ढ. We also learned these words with each letter.

  • ठ (tha)

  • ठंड (thand)- cold

  • ठेला (thela)- push cart

  • ड (da)

  • डमरू (damru)- drum

  • डाल (daal)- branch

  • ढ (dha)

  • ढक्कन (dhakkan)- lid

  • ढक (dhak)- to cover


Then, we taught them the parts of a face, as listed below:

  • chehra (face)- चेहरा

  • aankh (eye)- आँख

  • kaan (ear)- कान

  • naak (nose)- नाक

  • daant (teeth)- दाँत

  • honth (lips)- होंठ

  • thhodi (chin)- ठोड़ी

November 10

Today we had a quiz in class, and all the kids did really well! They had to write the first 8 letters (क ख ग घ च छ ज झ) in order, and answer verbal questions about the numbers १-५, and the sentences they learned earlier. We also checked the letters क-झ in their workbooks.

Then we learned a new letter ट, along with the following words.

  • टमाटर (tamatar)- tomato

  • टोपी (topi)- hat

Please ensure the kids are done with the letters क-ट in the workbook.


November 3

Today we learned two new letters- ज (ja) and झ (jha).

We learned two words with ज:

  • जग- jug

  • जलेबी- jalebi

We also learned one word with झ:

  • झरना (jharna)- waterfall.


Please make sure the kids practice writing these letters, as झ is a very challenging letter to write.

We will have a quiz next week on the letters क-झ, the numbers १-५, and the sentences we have learned, which are all in previous updates below.

October 27

Happy Diwali to all!

Today we learned two new letters, च (cha) and छ (chha).


The words we learned for च are:

  • चरख़ा (charkha)- spinning wheel

  • चम्मच (chammach)- spoon

  • चादर (chadar)- blanket


The words we learned for छ are:

  • छतरी (chhatari)- umbrella

  • छत (chhat)- roof


We also taught them a new sentence: Aapko Deepavali kee hardik shubhkaamnayen, which means hearty best wishes for Deepavali to you.


October 13

Today we revised क (ka) and ख (kha), and learned new alphabets ग and घ.

The new words we learned with क were:

  • कलम - Pencil

  • काग़ज़ - पेपर

  • ग : ग़मला

  • गाय - cow


घ :

  • घड़ा - water pot

  • घड़ी - watch/ clock

  • घर - House


We also learned numbers - (1)१ एक, (2)२ दो, (3)३ तीन, (4)४ चार!


Afterwards, we revised the phrases :

आपका naam क्या है? मेरा नाम ** है।


Homework:

  • Please go over what we learned in class with them, and make sure they have completed क, ख, ग and घ in their workbooks.

  • We do not have class next week . So please ask them to revise their words and sentences at home. Next class, please make sure they have their pencil, workbook and kilakari book in their bag.


October 6

Today we emphasized the difference between क (ka) and ख (kha), and learned some words with each letter.

The words we learned with क were:

  • कबूतर-pigeon

  • केला-banana

  • कमल-lotus


The words we learned with ख were:

  • ख़रगोश-rabbit

  • खाँसी-cough


Afterwards, we revised the phrases मैं ठीक हू (mein teek hoon) and मैं ठीक नही हू (mein teek nehi hoon).


Homework:

Please go over what we learned in class with them, and make sure they have completed क and ख in their workbooks.

September 29

We had a great full class today!

We started off by practicing speaking a little Hindi. They learned how to say “Hello, how are you?” (Namaste, aap kaise ho) and “I am fine,” (Mein theek hoon). Afterwards, we learned the letters क and ख, and how to pronounce them (क-ka, ख-kha).

Their homework is to finish writing क and ख in their books. Also, please practice speaking with them.


September 22

Namaste parents!

We had a great introduction class, and it was nice to get to know all the kids!

We quickly went over names, and what this class will be like. Homework will always be posted on the websites in these updates, as well as what we did in class.
