Dharma 4B - Ramayana

2017-2018

Class Information -

This class covers: Learn the core tenets of Dharma through the example of Shri Rama. Focus is on the Ramayanas of Valmiki, Tulsidas and Kamban. Use the animated Ramayana DVD to start the year. Cover the main episodes in the story of Ramayana. Each class should have an activity. Teach the Hanuman Chalisa and Ramastuti.

May 6th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • We practiced the Hanumaan Chalisa a couple of times.

  • We went out and played for some time.

  • Its been a good year for me. I hope your children enjoyed hearing the Ramayana, and learning the shlokas.

  • Next week, I will be out of town, and Shashank, our teen volunteer, will be in class. The students will watch some Ramayana videos.

April 29th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • We heard about Ravana's death at the hands of Rama, and Rama being crowned King on his return to Ayodhya.

  • We also learned the last 8 verses of the Hanumaan Chaalisa.

  • We have completed the syllabus for this year.

  • Next Sunday, we will be having a fun day, playing games.

April 22nd-

Material Covered in Class:

  • We heard about Lanka Kaandam, and some of Yuddha Kaandam. We also learnt a few more verses of the Hanumaan Chalisa.

  • We have the last part of the Yuddha Kaandam and the last 8 verses of the Hanumaan Chalisa for next week. We will then complete our syllabus for this year.

  • The following week, i.e. May 6, will be a Fun Day. After reciting the Hanumaan Chalisa a couple of times, Shashank and I will have some games for the children.

April 1st-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Finished Sundarakaandam

  • Will start Lanka Kaandam next class.

  • Learned 4 more verses of the Hanumaan Chaalisa

March 25th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • The children did a good job on stage.

  • We started Sundarakaandam, and heard about Hanumaan's arrival in Lanka and meeting with Sita.

  • Next few weeks, we will concentrate on learning the Hanumaan's Chalisaa.

March 18th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • We rehearsed for our presentation next week.

Homework:

  • Please practice at home, meet at 9:45 outside of auditorium on Sunday

March 11th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Finished Kishkinda Kaandam. Hanumaan is getting ready to fly to Lanka.

  • Revised Rama stotram and bhajan. Please have the students practice.

Homework:

  • Please remind students to think of Ramayana-related questions to ask the audience during our presentation at assembly.

  • I would like students to wear Indian costumes on March 25, the day of our presentation.

March 4th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Started Kishkinda Kaandam; Rama meets Sugreeva, Vaali is killed, and Sugreeva becomes king.

  • We practiced the Rama Stotram and the bhajan.

Homework:

  • Parents, our class will be presenting at the assembly on Sunday, March 25. Please make sure that your child is here by 9:45am that day. Also, please have them practice the song and the shloka as often as possible.

  • I have asked them to come up with a list of questions from the Ramayana that we could quiz the audience. Do remind them about it.

February 11th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • We heard about Jatayu trying to save Sita but getting hurt; Kabandha's death at the hands of Rama; and Sabari offering forest fruits to Rama and Lakshmana. We will start Kishkinda kaandam in our next class.

  • We also learned a couple more verses of the Hanuman Chalisa, and practiced the Rama bhajan.

  • Students will attend meditation class next week, instead of our usual routine.

January 28th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • We heard about Sita getting carried away by Ravana.

  • Learned a couple verses of Hanumaan Chalisa, and revised the Rama stotram and bhajan.

January 21st-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Heard about the death of Khara and Dooshana at the hands of Rama. Ravana is set to go to the Dandaka forest with Mareecha, planning to carry Sita off.

  • Learned two more verses of Hanumaan Chalisa.

January 7th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Revised Rama Stotram and Ram Bhajan

  • Started with Aranya Kaandam, and heard about Soorpanakha's nose and ears being cut off.

  • Learned a couple more verses of Hanuman Chaalisa.

December 17th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Did a quiz in class, instead of the story. I was very happy and impressed with the answers the students gave, and how well they remembered names and details.

  • We also learned a Ram bhajan.

December 10th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Revised Rama Stotram and learned two more verses of Hanuman Chalisa.

  • Story -- Finished with Ayodhya Kaandam -- Rama refuses to go back to Ayodhya when Bharata and all of Ayodhya come to the Chitrakoota mountain to ask him to come back and rule the kingdom.

Homework:

  • Please have your child practice the shlokas regularly.

December 3rd-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Finished teaching the sixth and last verse of Shri Rama Stotram.

  • Last week, I had most children recite the Rama Stotram individually. They all did a great job.

  • Story -- Bharata and Shatrughna are back in Ayodhya. And have just heard about the tragedies. Bharata has decided he will go meet Rama in the forest and ask for his forgiveness.

  • We learned two more verses of the Hanumaan Chalisa.

Homework:

  • Please have children practice the shlokas.

November 19th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Talked about Shravana Kumar and the death of King Dasharatha.

Homework:

  • Please practice the shlokas.

  • No class next week.

  • See you on December 3.

November 12th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Rama, Lakshmana and Sita have entered the Chitrakoota forest. Dasaratha remembers meeting Shravan's parents, and wants to tell Kausalya about it.

Homework:

  • Please have your children read the shlokas a couple of times every day. We have been learning the Shree Rama Stotram and Hanuman Chalisa.

November 5th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Started Ayodhya Kandam -- Rama, Lakshmanan and Sita are ready to leave for their exile.

October 29th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • First half of class: did hatha yoga

  • Second half: continued with the Ramayana story. Completed Bala Kaandam.

October 22nd-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Full session with meditation class

October 15th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • We did the second verses of both the Rama Stotram and Hanuman Chalisa.

  • Continued the story of Ramayana -- Rama and Lakshmana have reached Mithila with Sage Vishwamitra.

  • Next week, 4B students will have meditation class.

October 1st-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Taught a Ram Bhajan (Athma Rama)

  • Gave lyrics to kids and completed the bhajan

September 24th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Did introductions.

  • Learned the first verse of Sri Rama Stotram.

  • Started with the Ramayana -- birth of the 4 boys, until going to the forest with Sage Vishwamitra.

  • Learned first verse of Hanuman Chalisa.

September 17th-

Material Covered in Class:

  • Did class introductions, talked briefly about the schedule/plan for the year, and introduced the Ramayana

  • Read Chapters One and Two of the Ramayana textbook.

  • Quiz NEXT WEEK (9/24) on Chapters One and Two.
