Class & Homework -

May 12

Hello Parents,

I am composing this email in English today, but planning to compose in Gujarati going forward ( if technology allows)

Yesterday was last day to have a class,we also played Kabaddi outside and had fun sharing the snacks.

We also shared a fact/trivia - Gujarat is the only state who has given birth to two founding fathers- Mahatma Gandhi (India) and Mohd Ali Jinnah (Pakistan). There is no other country on planet ( to my knowledge) as far this historical fact goes. I showed them a short video based on historical event on Youtube about Maharaj DigvijaySingh of Jamnagar, on how he helped / supported refugees from Poland during World War II..

Thanks for entrusting the responsibility to teach Gujarati language. It was a nice to mentor / guide the kids. I was involved later in the year and not all of you might be familiar with me.

I would be volunteering again in September 2019-May 2020 session and would be conversing in Gujarati language with the kids. I only have the wonderful kids for an hour, so cannot assume the responsibility to have them master the language. It would be fantastic if everyone of you try your best to converse in Gujarati ( unless you speak different native language at home). We are also planning to have monthly parent meeting to discuss and share feedback in our next HATS session.

I would like to thank Hemangbhai and Falguniben for helping me in this journey.

Till then enjoy the summer and we will see you in September for Gujarati Class.

Regards,

Kaushal

We had good class attendence this week.We were down a teacher and teen volunteer.

Group 2---Jai, Shivam, Nikhil and Vijay --read , write and translate workbook page 61, 56 and 57. They were given the homework in class. Just like Kaushalbhai's group.... parents please sign the kids homework. Many times even from older kids , I am told 'my mom did not show me the homework email'. Please work with us to reinforce learning.

Meera P read and write page 61, 56 and 57

Rest of group 1a see class notes and review homework

Pre k and K no homework, may review class work.

Some of you have asked for the prayer we do in class . It is called o eeshwer bhajiye tamane. If you search in YouTube " prarthana pothi" it is in that. If any parent volunteer or one of the older students wishes to type out lyrics in Gujarati and translate/transliterate in English and supply the class with a copy, we will welcome your help. As you know this is a volunteer base program.

Thank you.

Gujarati Learning Team.

Namaste !!

Entire class was spent on preparation for next week presentation during the Assembly hour. Kids did a good job learning and memorizing Indian National Anthem.

We learned from the kids that not all of them wants to crate a poster for the presentation while some kids have already created a poster.

Please read entire e-mail and follow them as many details are outline since we have less than a week left for the performance. Your support is greatly appreciated.

*********

As we outlined in earlier e-mail, we have assigned a topic to your kids as part of the poster. Pl work with your kids as shown below for their part.

Poster Guidelines: (1) Any size (2) Should have at least 3 lines describing their topic. (BONUS: If they can speak about their poster in the assembly.)

Level 1A : Gujarati Festivals

Diya : Festival of Lights (e.g. Diwali)

Aniya: Festival of Colors (e.g. Holi)

Vidya: Festival of Dance (e.g. Navaratri)

Level 1B: Present Famous Gujarati People (If you want, you could combine with your favorite Gujarati food as well.)

Druv: Narendra Modi

Kirtan: Sanjay Leela Bansali

Vinay: Dhirubhai Ambani

Please take a photo of your poster and send it to me by Friday, 1/11 so we can upload them on the laptop.

******

Two brothers - Jay and Nikhil are lead singers for the Anthem. All other kids and teachers will sing the Anthem with them on the stage.

Paper Copy & YouTube : We have given a copy of the Anthem to all in a class (& also attached for your reference). Make sure kids practice the Anthem DAILY (or until they know). A link of the Anthem is listed below as well.

******

Dress code : Wear Indian outfit (Boys - Lengha and Jabba; Girls - Gujarati Chania Chori) Any color is fine. However, please wear orange, white and green since it represent color of Indian Flag.

******

Time: Arrive by 9:20 am on Sunday, 1/13. Pl make sure ALL of you arrive on-time since we have to decide few logistics (such as order of posters, practice etc.)

******

Outline of the presentation: Since we will have less than 15 minutes, we should use our time wisely.

(1) Stage setup and sing the Anthem: 5 minutes

(2) Kids presentation (10-mins): Each kids should introduce them in GUJARATI. If they wants to describe their poster, they can - it is optional. Also, they can speak why they want to learn Gujarati (they can speak Gujarati and/or English)

*********

Thank you very much for your support and letting us to teach your kids our native language. Pl let us know if you have any questions.

YouTube link is below:

Presentation Reminder

Hope you have a wonderful time-off with your family during these Holidays. Certainly, I have !!

You may know from your kids that we are having a presentation during 1/13 assembly. Since 1/13 is close to Indian Republic Day (1/26), it is a good time to present Indian National Anthem during the Assembly.

We did not have much time to prepare for the presentation. We have only Sun 1/6 to practice. Please let your kids practice the Anthem during the break (see the attached file).

We may also want to incorporate Gujarat state/ Gujarati language as part of the assembly. For as an example, kids can have everybody introduce themselves in Gujarati and/or make a poster over the holidays regarding Gujarat. Some of ideas like : Gujarat specific festivals :Navaratri, makersankranti, Holi, Dasera, etc, Gujarati food, Gujarat economy Famous people of Gujarat such as Mahatama Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Current prime minister of India, Ratan Tata, richest person in the world (Ambani) etc.

It can be as simple as cutting and pasting pictures on a white cardboard. We would strongly encourage all kids in grade 4 and over to make a board. It should not take more than couple of hours to make a poster. Some of you may have remembered that we have presented similar posters during the HATS Annual Days during the end of the School Year.

Our request to all of you to please work with your kids during the break on the National Anthem and prepare a poster. If all possible, kids should bring a poster to 1/6 class for a review.

Link to document: CLICK HERE

Thanks and Have a great Happy Holidays and Happy New Year !!!

******

This is a friendly reminder that next week we will practice our National Anthem in the class as part of Gujarati Performance during Assembly on 1/13.

Hope you guys are helping your kids to prepare the poster as well. If you did not start working on the poster, I would like to assign a topic to all kids to make things easier for all of us.

Level 1A : Gujarati Festivals

Diya : Festival of Lights (e.g. Diwali)

Aniya: Festival of Colors (e.g. Holi)

Vidya: Festival of Dance (e.g. Navaratri)

Meera Patel : Janamastmi and Rakshabandhan

Level 1B: Present Famous Gujarati People (If you want, you could combine with your favorite Gujarati food as well.)

Druv: Narendra Modi

Kirtan: Sanjay Leela Bansali

Vinay: Dhirubhai Ambani

Level 2: Past Famous Gujarati People (If you want, you could combine with your favorite Gujarati food as well.)

Shivam: Mahatama Gandhi

Nikhil: Jamshedji Tata

Jai: Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

If you already start working on the poster, than it should be fine whatever you have prepare for. Above is just a guidelines to make easier for us - to cover more topics and avoid duplication :)

December 9

The kids have just taken the test and the results will be given next week. For the kids who weren't here today, they'll be taking it next time we see them.

They will be also learning if moved up a level or down one.

and again a reminder: There is no PTC for Gujarati class next week

and our gujurati presentation is coming up soon so we are hoping parents to give us ideas on what they would like to see on stage related to Gujarati or Gujrat.
