Although we did have one student test positive for COVID, we are not aware of any other cases at this time. If you are not feeling well, please communicate that with us now. The best way is to call or text the band hotline: (912) 549-0262
And late is wasting time. Please be on time. We start on the practice field every day this week at 8 a.m.
PARENTS, please do not plan to deliver a lunch during band camp. Several reasons for this:
Our schedule is approximate. We may take lunch early or late depending on weather and other factors.
A student cannot leave the rehearsal to get the lunch from you in your car.
A student cannot wait for you at the practice field while everyone else has left to go to the cafeteria.
McDonald's is about the WORST thing you can eat during band camp. So many students have become ill after being out in the heat and then scarfing down fast food.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE RHYTHM: At least make sure you understand the right notes. Check the key signature and make sure you know the right fingerings. If you are confident with all the notes, then teaching you the rhythms will be a lot easier.
One more helpful hint - listen to the original tunes! Scroll down for music videos. Listen to them often and get the songs into your skull.
Picture Day is Wednesday, July 27 (the week between band camp and the start of school). Details are TBA, but we expect to start at 8 a.m. and be done by noon. Picture Day includes individual pictures for our composite (the big pictures on the wall) as well as a full band photo and section photos. There is no make-up day for band pictures.
Our Preview Show schedule had to be adjusted due to 9th Grade Orientation at SCHS. All students should report to the practice field at 7:30 p.m. The performance will start at 8 p.m. and will last 20-30 minutes. 9th graders, please use your time wisely during orientation so you can be ready on time.
DO:
Drink water
Drink Gatorade, Powerade, etc. -- but not too much!
Eat a healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Get outside!
Use sunscreen
Wear a hat with a brim during rehearsal
DON'T:
Drink a bunch of soda
Drink a lot of caffeine
Eat a bunch of junk food and/or greasy fast food
Have milk/dairy with breakfast. It can spoil in your stomach when we are out in the heat.
We will take a bus to the University of South Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 3 (Labor Day weekend) to perform alongside the USC Carolina Band for their football game against Georgia State. $40 for students to experience an SEC football game. The price includes transportation, lunch, and a Carolina Band hat. This trip is OPTIONAL but strongly encouraged. Times will be announced once we have an itinerary from the Carolina Band. (The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on SECN+.)
Money is due THURSDAY, JULY 28 after the Preview Show.
$40 for students.
$15 for chaperones - includes lunch; you must ride the bus
$25 for "tag-a-longs" - game ticket ONLY; you provide your own transportation and meals
WHAT TO BRING/WEAR:
Hat with a brim
Sunglasses
sunscreen
a water jug, if you have one
A comfortable shirt or top. It must cover your shoulders AND your midriff (belly button).
ATHLETIC SHOES. You can bring crocs or flip-flops for indoor rehearsals, but when we are outside, you need proper footwear.
ATHLETIC SHORTS. Denim is not allowed. Do not wear denim. Khaki shorts are OK, but running shorts or basketball shorts are best.
Some people like to wear pants all the time. That is fine, BUT, no denim.
A few other tips for band camp success:
EAT BREAKFAST! Even if you usually don't eat breakfast, please eat something during band camp. Avoid mild/dairy. Fruit and toast are great.
HYDRATE! Start hydrating NOW for band camp. Drink plenty of water and avoid carbonated drinks starting now.
ACCLIMATE TO THE HEAT. In other words, get used to it. Go outside. Here's a crazy thought: Bring your instrument outside with you.
