Tuesday's rehearsal is our last rehearsal together before Thursday's Pre-LGPE Concert. If you need to miss the rehearsal, you must complete the online absence form by Monday. https://forms.gle/VxUQNuSr2PU2ajTM9
A few important details regarding Thursday's concert:
The audience is limited to family members only. There will be no livestream of this concert, but a video recording will be posted online as soon as possible following the concert.
There is no online registration for audience members for this concert.
Audience members must wear a mask at all times during the performance. This is in keeping with Screven County BoE policy.
Social distancing will be enforced.
The SCMS Band will have their concert before ours; please do not enter the auditorium until their performance is finished (around 6:20 p.m.).
Performers should wear all black, long black for the performance.
We had a wonderful turnout for our first TraiLS meeting on Friday! TraiLS (formerly known as OCS) stands for Training for Leadership Service. If you are interested in a leadership opportunity in next year's band program, you need to be a part of TraiLS. It's not too late! Our second meeting is Monday, Feb. 22.
Check the calendar for future TraiLS meetings. If you cannot attend a meeting, you are responsible for two things:
1) Let Mr. Carter know that you cannot attend.
2) Get with someone who attended the meeting to see what you missed.
Students who are interested in joining the Jazz Band should plan to stay after Symphonic Band practice for about 20 extra minutes on Thursday of next week for a quick orientation session. This will help me to prepare for our first rehearsal. Jazz Band is open to anyone who is interested, regardless of instrument or experience.
We will have a parent/booster meeting next week to discuss options and make a plan for our spring awards night. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 2 at 6:15 p.m. via Google Meet.
There are THREE ways to join in:
On your computer, go to https://meet.google.com/tht-mfrn-cfx. There is no special software to download.
Download the Google Meet app on your phone or tablet, then use the Meet code tht-mfrn-cfx
Dial 573-539-0801 and use the PIN: 655 212 140#. This method will be audio only; you will not be able to see anything in the Meet call.
The band calendar is being updated for the spring. The best way to stay up-to-date is to read the newsletter each week, and to check the calendar regularly.

In honor of Black History Month, this week's Listen to This features important contributions to music by African-American composers and performers. Quincy Hilliard is currently the composition teacher at the University of Louisiana - Lafayette. His story of "making it" as a published composer despite the unfair treatment he received due to his skin color is extraordinary. He has several well-known band pieces, including Sundance and this piece, Octane.
STEP 1: Fill out the online form: https://forms.gle/VxUQNuSr2PU2ajTM9
STEP 2: If you need to miss for school sports or activities and you completed Step 1, then there is no Step 2. For other reasons, let Mr. Carter know! The best way is to text the Band Hotline: (912) 549-0262. You can also email Mr. Carter at hank.carter@screven.k12.ga.us, or send a message via Remind.
REMEMBER: It is NOT good enough to tell a friend, "Hey, I won't be there because of ____." You need to TELL MR. CARTER DIRECTLY.
DURING BAND CLASS: Masks are required as you enter the band area, while you are in the instrument storage room (lockers), and at the start of band class. Go directly to your assigned seat in class. Obviously, you will need to remove your mask in order to play (except percussion). Put your mask back on if another section is working. Masks must be put on when we pack up at the end of class.
AFTER SCHOOL: Just like during band camp, masks should be worn at the start of rehearsal, during transitions, and at dismissal. Now that we are starting our regular after-school routine, we will not be doing screening/temperature checks before practice. Please stay home if you are sick. Please go home if you get sick during the school day.
Have you found the online band calendar yet? You can view it on your computer, sync it to your phone or tablet, or even print it!
