The Screven County Christmas Lights Parade is Saturday, December 12. The parade is in downtown Sylvania starting at 6:30 p.m. Report time for students is 5:00 p.m. in the SCHS Band Room. Since it will be dark outside, plan to decorate your instrument (and/or yourself) with Christmas lights!
Thank you to everyone for an outstanding rehearsal last week! We will do it again this week and on December 1. (There is no after-school rehearsal on Thanksgiving Week.)
The Symphonic Band will perform a concert of holiday music on Tuesday, December 8, beginning at 7 p.m. in the SCHS Auditorium. Admission is free. Everyone will be asked to reserve a seat so that we can follow social distancing guidelines. Masks will be required in the audience. The concert will also be livestreamed on Gamecock TV. More details to come.
After-school rehearsals for this concert are on TUESDAYS, starting THIS WEEK! Rehearsals are 3:30 - 5p.m. Please plan accordingly.
All band members are expected to wear ALL BLACK, LONG BLACK for our concerts. For men, that means a black shirt (long sleeve preferred), black pants, black socks, and black shoes (Bandos work well for this). Ladies can wear a black top and black slacks, a black top and a long black skirt, or a long black dress. Black shoes are also required for ladies. "Long black" applies to sleeves and skirt/dress length.
Auditions for District Honor Band this year will be via video recording in January. The audition fee is $5 and is due on (or before) Monday, November 23rd. See Mr. Carter for details or to pay your audition fee.
This is a new feature in Take Note. Each week, I will recommend a piece of music you should listen to. This week's piece is Vesuvius by Frank Ticheli
Mt. Vesuvius is the volcano that destroyed Pompeii in A.D. 79. The tension and fear surrounding an exploding volcano can be heard right away. Listen as the time signature alternates between 5/8 and 2/4. (It's actually written in 9/8.) Also, see if you can hear Dies Irae quoted. Remember, "Dies Irae" means, "day of wrath," so it is appropriate that it appears in a piece about the last days of Pompeii.
Ticheli is a composer known for his music for concert band, among other things. He is on the faculty at USC.
Don't forget to let Mr. Carter know! The best way is to text the Band Hotline: (912) 549-0262. You can also email Mr. Carter at hank.carter@screven.k12.ga.us, or send a message via Remind. It is NOT good enough to tell a friend, "Hey, I won't be there because of ____." You need to TELL MR. CARTER DIRECTLY.
DURING BAND CLASS: Masks are required as you enter the band area, while you are in the instrument storage room (lockers), and at the start of band class. Go directly to your assigned seat in class. Obviously, you will need to remove your mask in order to play (except percussion). Put your mask back on if another section is working. Masks must be put on when we pack up at the end of class.
AFTER SCHOOL: Just like during band camp, masks should be worn at the start of rehearsal, during transitions, and at dismissal. Now that we are starting our regular after-school routine, we will not be doing screening/temperature checks before practice. Please stay home if you are sick. Please go home if you get sick during the school day.
