Our "Spring Training" will be a little different this year. Instead of "Rookie Spring Training," we are doing May marching band rehearsals for EVERYONE. SCGMB ("Screven County Gamecock Marching Band") Spring Training will be on May 11, 13, 18, and 20 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) after school until 5:00 p.m.
NOTE: Masks are no longer required outdoors according to school policy (which follows CDC guidelines). Therefore, masks will not be required once we get outside. Students should bring a mask in case we need to move indoors.
WHAT TO WEAR FOR SPRING TRAINING: A comfortable t-shirt, shorts, sunglasses, and ATHLETIC SHOES. (Sorry, gang, but crocs are not athletic shoes. No crocs or sandals for marching band, please.) Many students choose to wear a ballcap or visor to keep the sun out of their eyes. Sunglasses are also a great idea.
If you have a school-owned instrument at home, please plan to bring it back to school on or before THURSDAY, MAY 13. ALL instruments must be brought to campus - no exceptions. You can check out a school-owned instrument for the summer after graduation on May 28.
Our graduation ceremony is Friday, May 28, at 8 p.m. in the stadium. The band will perform ceremonial music, including the National Anthem and the Alma Mater. This is one of the most important performances of the year, and we need everyone in attendance. (Failure to attend may result in you being removed from the band next year.)
REPORT TIME: 6 p.m. in the Band Room.
WHAT TO WEAR: Gentlemen should wear a button-down shirt with a collar, slacks, dress socks, and dress shoes. A tie is suggested, but not required. Ladies should dress nicely: wear something you would wear if your male companion was wearing a nice shirt and slacks, keeping in mind that your skirt, dress, or shorts need to go past your knee while you are seated.
Great job at our Spring Showcase Concert! The concert is available online in two places:
Livestream replay - https://youtu.be/b2JJ2-YGFnQ?t=573 - includes more closeups
Edited version - https://youtu.be/qaQu64-gTeY - shorter video with a little less "down time" between pieces
John Mackey is one of my favorite living composers for band. His pieces are full of emotion and energy. I really love the way he uses and embraces dissonances. Mackey wrote The Frozen Cathedral was in 2012 to honor the memory of J.P. Locke, son of John Locke, who recently retired as Director of Bands at UNC-Greensboro. Read more about John Mackey and The Frozen Cathedral here.
DURING BAND CLASS: Masks are required as you enter the band area, while you are in the instrument storage room (lockers), and at the start of band class. Go directly to your assigned seat in class. Obviously, you will need to remove your mask in order to play (except percussion). Put your mask back on if another section is working. Masks must be put on when we pack up at the end of class.
AFTER SCHOOL: Masks are no longer required for outdoor events and activities. Therefore, masks are not required at "spring training" as long as we are outdoors. Students should bring a mask in case we need to move indoors.
