The Livestock Parade is back! The parade is Saturday, April 3. Report to the Band Room at 9:45 a.m. We will be done by noon. I know it is the same day as prom, but we need everyone with us in the morning, please. Let's show off our Superior Band to the community in full force.
Color Guard Auditions will be April 12, 13, 14, and 15 (the week after Spring Break, Monday through Thursday), after school from 3:30 until 5:00 p.m. in the SCHS Gym. We need every band member to convince at least one young lady to audition for next year's group. Audition packets are available now from the front office or from Mr. Carter. Interested 8th graders should see Ms. O at SCMS.
Our "Spring Training" will be a little different this year. Instead of "Rookie Spring Training," we are doing May marching band rehearsals for everyone. SCGMB ("Screven County Gamecock Marching Band") Spring Training will be on May 11, 13, 18, and 20 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) after school until 5:00 p.m.
TraiLS meetings for the rest of the year have been added to the band calendar. Please check the calendar and plan accordingly. There is NO TraiLS meeting the week after Spring Break due to Color Guard auditions.
The symphony orchestra has been around for centuries, but concert bands as we know them today have only been around since the 1900's. (The tuba and euphonium weren't even invented until around 1835, and the saxophone wasn't even invented until around 1840!) One of the very first pieces to be written specifically for the concert wind band was Gustav Holst's First Suite in E-flat for Military Band. The "for Military Band" in the title means it was written specifically for the concert wind bands, which in that day were all military bands. The First Suite is still performed today, over 100 years after its premiere, by military and school bands.
DURING BAND CLASS: Masks are required as you enter the band area, while you are in the instrument storage room (lockers), and at the start of band class. Go directly to your assigned seat in class. Obviously, you will need to remove your mask in order to play (except percussion). Put your mask back on if another section is working. Masks must be put on when we pack up at the end of class.
AFTER SCHOOL: Just like during band camp, masks should be worn at the start of rehearsal, during transitions, and at dismissal. Now that we are starting our regular after-school routine, we will not be doing screening/temperature checks before practice. Please stay home if you are sick. Please go home if you get sick during the school day.
