We have a special guest attending our after-school rehearsal this week. (We rescheduled him to9 come this week since so many had to miss last week's rehearsal.) Composer and educator Frank McKinney, who wrote Sailors' Delight, will join us virtually. Please make every effort to be in rehearsal. If you have an athletic conflict, see if you can come to band first this week.
Just like last year, we have an online form you should use when you need to miss a rehearsal leading up to LGPE. This form must be completed at least one day in advance. (Usually, that means Monday.) Here's the link: https://forms.gle/VxUQNuSr2PU2ajTM9
TraiLS (formerly known as OCS) stands for Training for Leadership Service. If you are interested in a leadership opportunity in next year's band program, you need to be a part of TraiLS. TraiLS is an integral part of the leadership audition and selection process. The first TraiLS meeting is Friday, Feb. 19, and our second meeting is Monday, Feb. 22. This is in preparation for our first set of service projects, which are centered around next week's Pre-LGPE Concerts.
Check the calendar for future TraiLS meetings. If you cannot attend a meeting, you are responsible for two things:
1) Let Mr. Carter know that you cannot attend.
2) Get with someone who attended the meeting to see what you missed.
Our annual Pre-Fest Concert will be Thursday, February 25 in our auditorium. We will follow the same audience protocols as the Christmas concert.
We have a few band students quarantined some of this week due to contact tracing. If that's you, be sure to check Google Classroom on Monday afternoon for your assignments.
The band calendar is being updated for the spring. The best way to stay up-to-date is to read the newsletter each week, and to check the calendar regularly.

In honor of Black History Month, this week's Listen to This features important contributions to music by African-American composers and performers. Chris Crenshaw is one of the premiere jazz trombone players of our time -- and he's from Georgia! (He went to high school just up the road at Thomson High School, then went to college at Valdosta State.) Here, Crenshaw is featured as a member of the Georgia Horns, a jazz quintet made up of Georgia musicians. The link is for an entire concert, but take a listen to the first number, which was written by legendary American jazz composer and performer Chick Corea, who passed away unexpectedly this week.
STEP 1: Fill out the online form: https://forms.gle/VxUQNuSr2PU2ajTM9
STEP 2: If you need to miss for school sports or activities and you completed Step 1, then there is no Step 2. For other reasons, let Mr. Carter know! The best way is to text the Band Hotline: (912) 549-0262. You can also email Mr. Carter at hank.carter@screven.k12.ga.us, or send a message via Remind.
REMEMBER: It is NOT good enough to tell a friend, "Hey, I won't be there because of ____." You need to TELL MR. CARTER DIRECTLY.
DURING BAND CLASS: Masks are required as you enter the band area, while you are in the instrument storage room (lockers), and at the start of band class. Go directly to your assigned seat in class. Obviously, you will need to remove your mask in order to play (except percussion). Put your mask back on if another section is working. Masks must be put on when we pack up at the end of class.
AFTER SCHOOL: Just like during band camp, masks should be worn at the start of rehearsal, during transitions, and at dismissal. Now that we are starting our regular after-school routine, we will not be doing screening/temperature checks before practice. Please stay home if you are sick. Please go home if you get sick during the school day.
Have you found the online band calendar yet? You can view it on your computer, sync it to your phone or tablet, or even print it!
